NFL draft
The NFL Draft (officially the NFL Annual Player Selection Meeting[1]) is an annual sports draft in which National Football League (NFL) teams take turns, through seven rounds[2], selecting amateur college American football players and other first-time eligible players.
The draft is always presided over by the NFL commissioner, currently Roger Goodell.
The draft
The draft is usually held the last weekend of April at a site in New York City. It usually begins just after Noon Eastern Daylight time with the commissioner opening the draft by declaring the team with the worst record in the league as being on the clock. This means that they have 10 minutes left to get their pick up to the stage, where it is announced to the world. The draft ends late Sunday afternoon with the announcement of the final pick of the 7th round who becomes noted as Mr. Irrelevant as the last person picked in the draft though teams have the right to snap up any undrafted college players by signing them as free agents.
Minutes allowed between picks per round
The number of minutes in the 1st Round and the 2nd Round were reduced on October 23, 2007. The number for the 1st Round was reduced from 15 minutes to 10 minutes. The 2nd Round went from 10 to 7.
- 1st Round-10 minutes
- 2nd Round-7 minutes
- 3rd-7th Rounds-5 minutes
Players only have to be out of high school 2 years before they can be drafted.[citation needed]
Trades
Teams are allowed to trade picks. General Managers typically refer to the draft pick value chart when negotiating trades.[1]
