America's Next Top Model, Cycle 4 aired in spring 2005, with the shooting location being moved from New York City to Los Angeles. The catch-phrase of the season was "Dive In".
The international destination during this cycle was Cape Town, South Africa. The winner was 20 year old Naima Mora from Detroit, Michigan. She won a contract for representation with Ford Models, a fashion spread within ELLE magazine, and a $100,000 contract with CoverGirl cosmetics.

The Girl Who Is A Lady Kat... Reow!

The 20 contestants who survive the audition round are cut down to 14. The more memorable auditions include Tiffany's, who was selected as a semi-finalist for Cycle 3, but was disqualified for getting in a bar fight. This time around, after going through anger management classes, she is back and determined to make good of her time. Also, contestant Mary tried out for Cycle 3 of America's Next Top Model, came back, but didn't make the cut once again. Lluvy recounts how she was once part of a gang, and Naima talks about her dysfunctional childhood. The episode is named after semi-finalist Jessika, who is nicknamed "Lady Kat".
The Girls Who Hate Their Makeovers
Original Airdate: March 9, 2005
The cycle begins with Jay Manuel, the show's director of photography, taking the 14 contestants taken to an LA movie, where they meet the judges, Nigel Barker, Janice Dickinson and Nolé Marin. The judges are dressed as the "fashion police" and introduce the contestants to their first photo shoot,Aliens In Manhattan. Many girls impress the judges, but the situation quickly sours when Brandy claims to have had to wait the longest, irking Nigel, their photographer for the day.
After the shoot, the girls are driven to a luxurious house decorated with the themes of LA, which will be their residence for the rest of the cycle. Afterwards, they go to a salon for their makeovers. Brandy and Keenyah, however, both complain throughout the entire process. Brandy is upset in large part because her eyebrows are to be bleached orange, and she complains that they look like part of her skin and her boyfriend will be disappointed with her new look.
At the first judging, Brandy and Keenyah's bad attitudes were frowned upon. Brandy is in the bottom two, together with Brita. In the end, Brita is eliminated because the judges think that Brandy still has much room for improvement, but Brita is unable to mask her age in photo shoots.

The Girl Who Suddenly Collapsed
Original Airdate: March 16, 2005
The girls meet runway coach Miss J. Alexander at a stadium, where they are taught how to walk in a straight line, up and down gradients, and while carrying items. While most girls adapt well, Sarah struggles and walks awkwardly throughout the entire duration.
The next day, they are brought to K-Mart for their reward challenge. They each have to pick an item to use while walking down the supermarket aisle, and evaluation is elimination style. Rebecca wins the challenge, and is rewarded with designer shoes by Stuart Weitzman, along with five friends. She picks Kahlen, Sarah, Noelle, Lluvy, and Naima to share her prize.
This week's photo shoot is for 1-800-Flowers. While Rebecca's photo is being evaluated, she experiences a relapse of her childhood balance disorder and faints. She is sent to the hospital before she decides to continue on with judging and elimination. Keenyah is criticized for her poor choice in wardrobe, but makes up for her previous week's poor performance with a stellar photo.
Brittany is criticized for being overly sexy to where it's triple-X in her photos, but Sarah is eliminated for her poor runway walk.

The Girl With The Worst Photo In History

The girls are given a ballet lesson. Later, they are taken to a tennis court, where they are told that they are shooting various tennis shots for a big client. Unknown to them, this is actually a test to gauge their response to being under pressure. The "client" is actually an actor told to give the girls a hard time. Almost all the girls get frustrated, and Brandy later takes out her irritation on Tatiana. After the shoot, Jay Manuel finally reveals that the photo shoot was a test, and Naima is crowned the winner for being the only one who stayed calm under pressure. She picks Kahlen and Tiffany to accompany her on her reward, which is dinner with tennis star Serena Williams. Naima is also given an autographed tennis racquet.
In this week's photo shoot, the 12 remaining girls become the 12 signs of the zodiac, and Brandy once again shows bad attitude on set.

The Girl Who Is Contagious

The theme for the week is makeup application, and Jay Manuel meets the girls at an art studio, introducing the task. They each have a limited amount of time to rush over to the various CoverGirl stations to apply makeup resembling "haute couture". Naima is the only one to fully grasp the concept, and wins the challenge. She chooses Christina and Lluvy to share in her prize of Lauren Scherr custom made handbags.
Noelle calls her mother, describing Michelle's facial blemishes which would not go away. These are suggested to be a "deadly and contagious flesh eating bacteria that will cause certain death", which causes a panic attack among the girls who had previously shared makeup with Michelle. The pandemonium continues all the way to the photo shoot, where the girls have to pose as different ethnicities with children for a GOT MILK? ad, and Jay quickly sends Michelle for medical attention. Michelle's disease is revealed to be impetigo, a treatable skin disease. Because of the possible skin-to-skin contact with children, Michelle ends up posing with a doll, which causes some jealousy among the other contestants who had to pose with jumpy children. However, Mr. Jay did recognize the fact that it was still hard for Michelle to pose, even with a doll, because the doll could not interact like a real human child.
At judging, Lluvy is called out for not using her unconventional beauty well in her photos, while Noelle is criticized for not looking "model" in person despite her great photos, which causes her elimination.

The Girl With The Deliciously Tacky Dance
Original Airdate: April 6, 2005
Tyra teaches the girls about the business side of modeling, and introduces her parents. Tyra talks about the ins and outs of the industry, and warns the girls against signing a contract without reading or understanding it.
After this session, the girls are invited to a CoverGirl Cosmetics industry party, where they are given time to converse with guests and possibly gain contacts. Unknown to them, the party was a secret challenge to see who could leave the best impression. Keenyah wins the challenge and chooses Brittany to accompany her for a stay at a hotel and spa.
For the week's photo shoot, the girls have to pose at an old gas station while being blasted with cold rain and strong winds. Many girls succumb to the surroundings.
During judging, the judges are fed up that Lluvy and Rebecca are both not making any progress. Lluvy is eliminated in her third consecutive appearance in the bottom two.

The Girl Who Pushes Tyra Over The Edge
Original Airdate: April 13, 2005
The girls are given scripts to read and memorize before having to act in a scene with male model Boris Kodjoe. While many girls flub their lines due to anxiety, Naima once again wins the challenge. She picks Michelle and Tatiana to share in her prize, which is $10,000 worth of diamonds.
For the week's photo shoot, the girls model for Wonderbra while depicting a pillow fight scene in bed with male model Rib Hillis. Most of the girls struggle with the awkward situation, most notably Rebecca, who is in constant worry about her fiance's reaction.
For this week's pre-evaluation test, the girls read a passage filled with fashion-related jargon, testing their improvisational skills as well as fashion knowledge. Tiffany does not even attempt the challenge, and gives up. Tyra shows her disappointment in Tiffany, prompting a weak try from Tiffany before giving up again. This negative response lands Tiffany in the bottom two with Rebecca, who had clearly struggled with the photo shoot. In the end, both Rebecca and Tiffany are eliminated when Tyra pulls out a blank photo, to the shock of all of the girls. This marks the only episode in any ANTM cycle in which both girls in the bottom two are eliminated.
Tyra calls Rebecca and Tiffany back. While she commends Rebecca on her emotion, she chastises Tiffany for her joking attitude. When Tiffany starts to explain in a combative manner, Tyra loses her cool and explodes at Tiffany, yelling at her to stop defeating herself and take responsibility for her own actions.

The Girl Who Gets Bad News

The girls are taught how to conduct interviews. They are then put to the test as they interview rapper Eve. Christina is chosen as the winner because of her preparedness and clarity of speech, and wins an exclusive interview on Entertainment Tonight.
Right before they leave for the photo shoot, Kahlen receives a message that her best friend from high school has just died. Shaken by this sudden news, Kahlen is further disturbed when it turns out that the next shoot will be at a cemetery, where the models will portray the seven deadly sins while posing in a casket at the bottom of a grave. Jay Manuel learns of this and allows Kahlen to opt out of the shoot, though it will affect her placement in the competition. After some consideration, Kahlen decides to go ahead, and is able to channel all her sorrow into her "sin" - wrath. The models' portrayal of the seven sins are as follows:

For the judging challenge this week, the panel poses as journalists asking the girls questions in a mock press conference for the America's Next Top Model clothing line. The judges found most of the girls let the judges get the better of them.
At judging, the judges learn about Kahlen's news and are wowed by her picture. Michelle and Tatiana produce bland shots, however, which land them in the bottom two. The judges feel that Michelle has more potential and desire to win and send Tatiana home.

The Girls The Lionesses Are Hunting
Original Airdate: April 27, 2005
The girls are driven to an empty parking lot, where their challenge for the week requires them to show their "wild side" and pose as animals. The girls are told that they are flying to Cape Town, South Africa. Since Brittany posed the best and had the best facial expressions, her enthusiasm wins her the challenge.
Upon landing in South Africa, the girls are treated to a scenic safari ride that ends at a clearing. Brittany is then told that she can pick two friends to share in her prize - luxury accommodation at a hotel, while the other three have to rough it out in the wilderness. As Kahlen, Naima and Michelle bond in their tents, Brittany, Christina and Keenyah have to deal with a cockroach problem at their hotel.
For the week's photo shoot, the girls have to pose as animals in the South African safari with a crocodile for Lubriderm.

The judges are once again amazed with Kahlen and her portrayal of the springbok, the national animal of South Africa. Keenyah's weight issue and Michelle's inability to handle pressure land them in the bottom two. Despite having a strong photograph, Michelle is eliminated as she is deemed not strong enough to handle the tough modeling industry.

The Girl Who Flops In The Mud
For their challenge, the girls go on a go-see and meet several important people in the fashion industry. Several make comments about Keenyah's weight problem, but in the end, she wins the challenge and picks Brittany to accompany her to designer Craig Port's house. Naima is the only one who misses the 4:30 deadline because she feels it is important to see everyone, but is criticized for this.
This episode reveals the first crack in Brittany and Keenyah's seemingly solid friendship. Brittany unwittingly steals the show from Keenyah at Craig Port's party, getting drunk off many glasses of wine and ending the evening mimicking the doggy style sexual position with Craig Port while the other guests look on and laugh. Keenyah regrets bringing Brittany along.
For this week's photo shoot, the girls are taken deep into the South African jungle, and they stop at a picturesque waterfall for their shoot. They have to make their own outfits from their surroundings, including leaves and mud. Brittany flopped around in mud to make her outfit.
At judging, the girls are told to critique each other's photos, and state who they feel has the most and least amount of potential. Kahlen amazes the judges with her acute fashion-based analysis, while Brittany's comments lack insight. This week, Christina finds herself in the bottom two for the first time because the judges find her persona "icy cold", and she is unable to mask this in front of the panel. Brittany also lands in the bottom two for her poor pre-evaluation task performance, but is not eliminated.

The Girl Who Is Special
Original Airdate: May 11, 2005
The reward challenge this week requires the contestants to learn the traditional South African dance and perform it in front of a live audience. Keenyah tells the South African dancers that she feels like she is "home," and that she has much more of a connection with South Africa since she is the only black girl, which Naima takes offense to as she is half-black. Naima gets her fourth challenge win of the season, and wins 30 extra frames for the photo shoot. She is allowed to pick friends to share with her the reward of extra frames, and Kahlen is strategically left out due to Naima perceiving her as the biggest threat.
The girls are brought to see Nelson Mandela's cell afterwards. Keenyah, who feels a connection with her roots in Africa, and hearing of Mandela's ordeal for democracy, cries, even though she knows nothing about Mandela. This irks the girls, most notably Brittany, who is irritated that Keenyah whines to her how great Mandela is but does not even know whether he is alive or dead. At the prison, the guide passes a key to Naima to open the cell, which upsets Keenyah because she thinks that it is her "birthright". The bad air is cleared momentarily as the final four soak in the history of the location.
After this, the girls are brought to Mandela's residence, where they listen to Mandela's advice and philosophy.
For the photo shoot, the girls pose while dancing with male models. Naima and Brittany excel, but Keenyah gets disturbed when her male model touches her and grunts in her ear, and confronts him after the shoot. Kahlen, who up until now producing stellar photos, has her worst photo shoot ever, and admits that she still isn't comfortable "being sexy". On the drive back, Keenyah complains about the incident with the male model. The girls, already irritated by her actions throughout the day, ignore her. When she touches on the subject about the cell, Brittany finally lets loose and gives Keenyah a severe verbal lashing.
This confrontation takes its toll on Brittany, who lands in the bottom two with Naima who lands in the botton two due to her dwindling personality. In the end, the judges felt that Brittany's defeated demeanor was too obvious to ignore and she is eliminated.

The Girl Who Walks On Water

The final three meet Jay Manuel and shoot a commercial and print ad for CoverGirl. Naima breezes through both rounds and is the first selected for the final two. Kahlen produces a stunning CoverGirl shot, but her performance in the commercial is moderate. Keenyah, on the other hand, has a decent commercial and photo. Keenyah's weight problem and arrogant attitude get her eliminated, as the judges feel that Kahlen's stunning portfolio show more potential.
For their final runway walk, the girls meet Ms. J at a runway partially submerged underwater and are given a crash course about how to stomp on water. At night, the show begins as Kahlen and Naima emerge from behind a waterfall and strut down the runway together with a bevy of other models. The judges are torn between the high fashion appeal of Kahlen and Naima's commercial appeal. While they feel Kahlen's pictures had been consistently stronger, she failed her final runway assessment. Tyra compared Kahlen to a girl who "did good all semester and kinda failed her final exams", and Naima to a girl who "did fair during semester and "killed" the final exams."
Kahlen and Naima are brought back in and Naima is crowned America's Next Top Model.
