(161975) Kincsem is an asteroid of the central main belt , which was discovered on June 8, 2007 by the Hungarian amateur astronomer Krisztián Sárneczky at the Piszkéstető Observatory ( IAU code 561) in the northern Hungarian Mátra Mountains on behalf of the Budapest Konkoly Observatory . The asteroid had already been sighted on September 9, 1999 under the provisional designation 1999 SA 16 as part of the Catalina Sky Survey .
The orbit of the asteroid around the sun has a high eccentricity of 0.2536 and, at almost 18 °, is strongly inclined to the ecliptic of the solar system . With an albedo of 0.037 (± 0.017) it has a very dark surface.
(161975) Kincsem was named on July 26, 2010 after the English thoroughbred mare Kincsem (1874–1887), who - measured by the number of victories - has so far been the most successful racehorse in history.
