(1640) Nemo is an asteroid crossing Mars which was discovered on August 31, 1951 by the Belgian astronomer Sylvain Julien Victor Arend at the Royal Observatory of Belgium ( IAU code 012) in Uccle . The asteroid had already been sighted in October 1906 under the provisional designation A906 UA at the Heidelberg observatory on the Königstuhl .
The rotation period of (1640) Nemo was determined by Wiesław Z. Wiśniewski et al. determined to be 5.0 hours.
The asteroid was named on April 8, 1982 at the suggestion of Jean Meeus after the fictional character Captain Nemo by Jules Verne . Also named after Captain Nemo in 2018 was an impact crater on the Pluto moon Charon : Charon Crater Nemo .
