(2178) Kazakhstania is an asteroid of the main inner belt , which was discovered by the Soviet astronomer Nikolai Tschernych on September 11, 1972 at the Crimean Observatory in Nautschnyj ( IAU code 095). Observations of the asteroid had already been made in October 1949 at the State Observatory in Heidelberg-Königstuhl under the provisional designation 1949 UC.

The mean diameter of the asteroid was calculated to be 4.313 (± 0.071) km .

Mean solar distance ( major semi-axis ), eccentricity and inclination of the orbit plane of the asteroid roughly resemble the orbital data of the members of the Flora family, a large group of asteroids named after (8) Flora . Asteroids of this family move in a 4: 9 orbital resonance with the planet Mars around the sun . The group is also called the Ariadne family, after the asteroid (43) Ariadne .

According to the SMASS classification ( Small Main-Belt Asteroid Spectroscopic Survey ), a spectroscopic study by Gianluca Masi , Sergio Foglia and Richard P. Binzel in (2178) Kazakhstania assumed a bright surface, so it could, roughly speaking, be around trade an S-asteroid , the albedo of 0.415 (± 0.074) actually suggests a rather bright surface for asteroids.

On October 1, 1979, based on further observations from 1975 to 1978, a number for the asteroid was assigned. On April 1, 1980 (2178) Kazakhstania was named after the Kazakh Soviet Socialist Republic .

Moon S / 2018 (2178) 1

In 2018, at (2178) Kazakhstania, it was found that the asteroid 8 km away had a companion almost a quarter of its size, 1.08 km. The moon needs about 0.771 days for an orbit around (2047) Smetana. The companion was given the provisional designation S / 2018 (2178) 1 .
