(2784) Domeyko ( 1975 GA ; 1959 TS ; 1972 KD ; 1972 LK ; 1979 ST 1 ; 1982 JB ) is an asteroid of the inner main belt that was discovered on April 15, 1975 by the Chilean astronomer Carlos Torres at the Cerro El Roble observatory on the Cerro El Roble was discovered in the La Campana National Park in the Región de Valparaíso in Chile ( IAU code 805).
designation
(2784) Domeyko was named after the Polish geologist and mineralogist Ignacy Domeyko (1802-1889), who moved to Chile in 1830 as a teacher of chemistry and mineralogy. In 1846 he became professor of mineralogy and later rector at the Universidad de Chile in Santiago de Chile . In recognition of his extensive geological surveys across the country, the government offered him Chilean citizenship.
