(2878) Panacea ( 1980 RX ; 1938 UE ) is an approximately 10 miles large asteroid of the main outer belt that was discovered on September 7, 1980 by the American astronomer Edward LG Bowell at the Lowell Observatory , Anderson Mesa Station ( Anderson Mesa ) in the Was discovered near Flagstaff , Arizona ( IAU code 688). It belongs to the Eos family , a group of asteroids named after (221) Eos .
designation
(2878) Panacea was named after Panakeia , the goddess of healing in Greek mythology . She is the daughter of Asclepius , after whom the asteroid (1027) Aesculapia is named; as well as the sister of Hygieia , Machaon and Podaleirios . The asteroids (10) Hygiea , (3063) Makhaon and (4086) Podalirius are named after their siblings . The name was made by the discoverer Edward LG Bowell after a recommendation by the Belgian mathematician, astronomer and author Jean Meeus .
