(6451) Carinthia is an asteroid of the middle main belt that was discovered by the German astronomer Freimut Börngen on April 9, 1991 at the Thuringian State Observatory Tautenburg ( IAU code 033). The asteroid had been observed several times before, for example at the Tautenberg Observatory in February 1982 under the provisional designation 1982 DF 4 .
The railway from (6451) Carinthia was secured in 1995 so that numbering could be assigned. On November 7th of the same year the asteroid was named after the southernmost state of the Republic of Austria , Carinthia , at the suggestion of Freimut Börngen .
