(7260) Metelli is a main outer belt asteroid discovered on March 18, 1994 at the Santa Lucia Stroncone Observatory in Italy ( IAU code 589) near Terni in Umbria . Unconfirmed sightings of the asteroid had already been made in September 1981 (1981 RP 5 ) at the Palomar Observatory in California .

The eccentricity of the asteroid is small with rounded up 0.0086, so that its orbit around the sun comes very close to an ideal circular path, similar to the eccentricity of the planet Neptune (0.0086). It is significantly less than the earth's eccentricity (0.0167).

(7260) Metelli is a member of the Koronis family, a group of asteroids named after (158) Koronis . The timeless (non- osculating ) orbital elements of (7260) Metelli are almost identical to those of six smaller ones, if one considers the absolute brightness of 14.8, 15.2, 15.1, 17.0, 16.8 and 16, 5 compared to 13.1, asteroids: (38245) Marcospontes , (78372) 2002 PJ 125 , (83595) 2001 SX 256 , (185272) 2006 UL 159 , (281589) 2008 UH 145 and (355156) 2006 VD 66 .

(7260) Metelli was named on December 8, 1998 after the painter Orneore Metelli (1872–1938). Metelli, who comes from Terni, is attributed to naive painting .
