(7268) Chigorin is an asteroid of the main inner belt , which was discovered by the Ukrainian - Soviet astronomer Lyudmyla Shuravlowa on October 3, 1972 at the Crimean Observatory in Nautschnyj ( IAU code 095). Unconfirmed sightings of the asteroid had already occurred on November 26, 1962 with the provisional designation 1962 WW at the Goethe Link Observatory in Indiana .
The Italian astronomer Vincenzo Zappalà defined in a publication from 1995 (et al.) That (7268) Chigorin belonged to the Flora family, a large group of asteroids named after (8) Flora . Asteroids of this family move in a 4: 9 orbital resonance with the planet Mars around the sun . The group is also called the Ariadne family, after the asteroid (43) Ariadne .
(7268) Chigorin was named on March 9, 2001 after the Russian chess player Michail Tschigorin (1850-1908, English transcription from Russian: Mikhail Chigorin ), who was one of the leading chess masters of his era and who contributed significantly to the spread of chess in Russia .
