history

The company was founded in 1880, primarily to develop the rural area in what was then Cisleithanien with local railways. The company owned the first railway line in 1881 with the Elbogen Localbahn in northwestern Bohemia . In the following years, the ÖLEG developed into the largest local railway operator in Austria.

As early as 1884, the ÖLEG handed over the management of some of its routes to external railway companies. In preparation for a planned nationalization, the management of the remaining routes was transferred to the kk Staatsbahnen (kkStB) on July 1, 1887 . From now on, the ÖLEG was only the owner of the infrastructure.

On January 1, 1894, the company was nationalized . The routes and vehicles were finally taken over by the kkStB.
