(12357) Toyako is an asteroid of the main outer belt discovered on September 16, 1993 by Japanese amateur astronomers Kin Endate and Kazurō Watanabe at the Kitami Observatory ( IAU code 400) on Hokkaidō .

The asteroid belongs to the Eos family, a group of asteroids, which typically have large semiaxes from 2.95 to 3.1 AU , bounded inward by the Kirkwood gap of the 7: 3 resonance with Jupiter , and orbital inclinations between 8 ° and 12 °. The group is named after the asteroid (221) Eos . The family is believed to have emerged from a collision more than a billion years ago. In an earlier definition of the AstDyS-2 database there was the definition of a separate asteroid family, the largest member of which was the asteroid (507) Laodica and to which (12357) Toyako was counted. In the current division of the main belt asteroids into families of the AstDyS-2 database, this definition no longer appears and (12357) Toyako is assigned to the Eos family.

The ageless (not osculating ) orbital elements of (12357) Toyako are almost identical with those of several dozen other asteroids such as (61338) 2000 PK .

The rotation period of (12357) Tokayo was established in 2009 by Brian D. Warner and in 2016 by Adam Waszczak, Chan-Kao Chang, Eran Ofek et al. examined. However, the light curves were not sufficient for a determination.

The mean diameter of the asteroid was calculated to be 14.534 (± 2.923) km , the albedo is 0.107 (± 0.060) and is comparable to that of the planet Mercury .

(12357) Toyako was named on May 20, 2008 after Lake Tōya ( Japanese 洞 爺 湖 , Tōya-ko ), a volcanic caldera lake in Shikotsu-Tōya National Park in Iburi sub-prefecture in southwest Hokkaidōs.
