(2307) Garuda is an asteroid of the main outer belt discovered on April 18, 1957 at the Argentine Observatorio Astronómico de La Plata ( IAU code 839).
The mean diameter of the asteroid was determined to be 44.22 km (± 1.3). With an albedo of 0.0454 (± 0.003) it has a very dark surface, almost as dark as that of the darkest known celestial body in the 19P / Borrelly solar system . According to the SMASS classification ( Small Main-Belt Asteroid Spectroscopic Survey ), a spectroscopic study by Gianluca Masi , Sergio Foglia and Richard P. Binzel , in which asteroids were divided into spectral classes C, S and V, (2307) Garuda den assigned to dark C asteroids .
The light curve of the asteroid was examined on March 16-19, 21 and 24, 2010 with the 50 cm Ritchey-Chrétien telescope at the Oakley Southern Sky Observatory in Coonabarabran , New South Wales . However, the rotation period of (2307) Garuda could not be determined with sufficient accuracy.
(2307) Garuda was named after Garuda on February 6, 1993 at the suggestion of the American astronomer Frederick Pilcher . In Indian mythology, Garuda is a snake-killing half-human, half-eagle-shaped mount ( Vahana ) of Vishnu . Garuda is the son of Kashyapa and Vinata . The Apollo asteroid (4034) Vishnu was named after Vishnu in 2011 , and the asteroid of the outer main belt (2347) Vinata after Vinata, also on February 6, 1993 .
