(39882) Edgarmitchell is a main inner belt asteroid discovered on March 1, 1998 by the Belgian astronomer Eric Walter Elst at the La Silla Observatory of the European Southern Observatory in Chile ( IAU code 809).
The diameter of the asteroid was calculated to be 2.490 km (± 0.675).
(39882) Edgarmitchell was named on March 23, 2016 after the US astronaut Edgar Mitchell, who had died six weeks earlier . Mitchell was the sixth person to step on the moon . The lunar crater Mitchell, on the other hand, was named after the astronomer Maria Mitchell in 1935.
