(6672) Corot is an asteroid of the main inner belt that was discovered on March 24, 1971 by the Dutch astronomer couple Cornelis Johannes van Houten and Ingrid van Houten-Groeneveld . The discovery took place during the 1st Trojan survey, during which Tom Gehrels surveyed field plates recorded by the 120 cm Oschin Schmidt telescope of the Palomar observatory at the University of Leiden , eleven years after the start of the Palomar-Leiden- Surveys .
The asteroid was named after the French landscape painter Jean-Baptiste Camille Corot (1796-1875), who was one of the main representatives of the Barbizon School .
