II Division
The II. Division (also called 2. Liga or 2. Oberliga ) was a division in German football from 1949 to 1963 . It was in the league system below the first-class Oberligen West (from 1949), Southwest (from 1951) and South (from 1950) the second highest German contract player class . Below the Oberliga Nord and the Contract League Berlin , on the other hand, there were one or more amateur leagues (in the north, several attempts to form a 2nd Oberliga failed due to the insufficient number of interested clubs).
The master and runner-up of the II. Division rose to the league. The last two placed had to be relegated to the amateur leagues.
When the Bundesliga was founded in the 1963/64 season, the II. Division was dissolved in favor of the newly created second-rate regional leagues . In addition to the league clubs not intended for the Bundesliga, eight in the west, six in the southwest (after a relegation round) and nine in the south qualified for the new regional league. The other clubs were assigned to the respective amateur leagues.
