Maia (meaning as "grandmother", "nurse", "The Big") is the proper name of the Plejaden belonging star 20 Tauri in the constellation Taurus .

properties

Maia has an apparent magnitude of +3.87 mag and belongs to the spectral class B8III. It is about 360 light years away from Earth ( Hipparcos database). According to measurements from the Gaia mission , the star is at a distance of 340 ± 30 light years away. That would make him one of the closest stars in the Pleiades.

As a variable star , the star belongs to the Alpha 2 -Canum Venaticorum stars . It also belongs to the special star class of the mercury-manganese stars .

The star is also part of the Maia nebula NGC 1432 , a reflection nebula .

Coverings

Pleiades occlusion by the moon on August 7, 2007

Maia, like all stars of the Pleiades, can occasionally be covered by the moon .

The next temporary occultations are expected again from 2024.
