ArmA 2 is a tactical shooter developed by Bohemia Interactive with a strong simulation character . It is the official sequel to ArmA: Armed Assault . The computer game was first published in Germany on May 29, 2009 by Peter Games for Windows . It was published in other countries via IDEA Games and 505 Games.

The stand-alone add-on ArmA 2: Operation Arrowhead , which was also developed by Bohemia Interactive, has been on the market since June 27, 2010 . The official successor ArmA 3 appeared on September 12, 2013 .

action

ArmA 2 takes place on the fictional mainland of Chernarussia. The island of Utes is included as an additional map. The player acts as part of a special command to ensure stability in the contested country. The Communist Chernarussian Red Star Movement is trying to put a coup against the existing government and throwing the country into a murderous civil war with high losses and atrocities on all sides.

The conflict is based very much on what happened in August 2008, the Georgian conflict between Russia and Georgia.

Gameplay

Since ArmA 2 is a military simulation, the degree of reality is very high. Even single hits in the extremities can limit the player's options for action - e.g. B. the character limps in the leg when hit - or completely incapacitates him. Often a mission can only be completed successfully if the team members are taken into consideration and the situation is analyzed calmly before the attack. For example, depending on the situation, it can make sense to fight the opponent from a great distance or to clarify his position and then strike at close range with the entire team at the same time. In general, a frontal attack on enemy positions is more a guarantee for a quick virtual death than for success, so that the gaming experience differs considerably from the usual, action-heavy first-person shooters such as Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare or Battlefield: Bad Company 2 .

Development history

ArmA 2 is the official successor to ArmA: Armed Assault . The game belongs to the genre of tactical shooters , but also has a strong simulation character. In contrast to ArmA, ArmA 2 offers better graphics on objects and people. The graphics of the landscape and vegetation have remained about the same. The game simulates the ballistic trajectories of the shots fired and the driving characteristics of vehicles.

From version 1.63 you have to own Steam in order to play the game, the multiplayer is no longer possible with the non-Steam version due to the Gamespy's shutdown.

Since June 23, 2011, a completely free version of ArmA 2 called ArmA 2 Free was available. It was a reduced version, in which the campaign, the mod support and the high-resolution textures were missing, whereby the multiplayer mode remained untouched, so that battles between the purchase and the free version were possible. ArmA 2 Free was discontinued on April 22, 2014.

Towards the end of 2009, Bohemia Interactive made software called "BI Tools 2" available for downloading for developing objects etc. The editor also plays a central role in ArmA 2 . It allows the player to create their own missions and then play them or share them with others. For simple missions, the tools available such as “set waypoints” and “create units” are sufficient. When higher demands are placed on the mission, scripts must be used.

In addition, artificial intelligence is very progressive in places, but mostly it seems overwhelmed. In addition, they can see through obstacles, which makes the balancing unbalanced. Daniel Shannon from the online magazine GameSpot praised the size of the game, which is above average for a shooter. The fights are also designed to be very demanding.

As with Armed Assault and Operation Flashpoint , an active mod scene developed around ArmA 2 . DayZ is one of the most famous mods .
