action

The mountaineers friends Alison, Ed, Rob, Alex and Jenny are out and about in the Scottish Highlands . When they take a break from climbing, they discover a ventilation pipe and a box in the middle of the forest, in which a little girl named Anna, who speaks a foreign language, is hidden. The friends want to get the girl out of the mountains as soon as possible. They study the map and decide to march to the nearest location, Annan Mor, which is about 15 miles. Rob and Alison take a short cut up the steep rock face of Devil's Drop.

Alison rappels down the rock face first. When Rob tries to follow her, he falls in front of Alison's eyes and lands next to a river in the depths. When stones rattle down from above, Alison also falls. Since she ends up in the water, she survives the fall and finds that Rob's rope was cut and that the stones had also been thrown down on purpose. In the meantime, the kidnappers of the girl, Mr. Kidd and Mr. Mcrae, meet two poachers, kill them and take their weapons. The kidnapped girl's father, the Serbian war criminal and millionaire Rakovic, has hired negotiator Darko and the two private detectives Andy and Chris to track down the kidnappers. These three are on their way to Annan Mor by car.

At a bend in the river, Alison can catch up with Ed, Alex, Jenny and little Anna. Alison signals to the friends across the roaring current that Rob is dead. Shortly afterwards, Jenny is fatally hit by a bullet and falls into the river with the child. However, Alison manages to bring the child ashore, despite being shot at by the kidnappers. While trying to escape from the kidnappers, Ed sustains an injury to his leg, but manages to hide with Anna to Alison and Alex. At the mercy of the approaching armed pursuers, Alex decides to undertake a coup to distract the determined men from his friends and Anna. He prepares his backpack so that it looks like he's escaping with the girl. Kidd and Mcrae fall for this trick, pursue Alex and shoot him. Ed, Alison and Anna use the distraction to escape.

Darko meets with Kidd in a pub in Annan Mor. He has a suitcase with a ransom of six million euros with him, which is equipped with a tracking device, but he only wants to hand over the money when he sees the girl. Alison, Ed and Anna have now made it to the Annan Mor Police Station. There Sergeant Gray is delaying the forwarding of her report. Ed becomes more and more suspicious of the cop and manages to convince Alison to leave. At that moment, shots are fired and the policeman is badly wounded. Alison and Ed escape through the back door with Anna. Chris stands in an alley, mistaking Ed for one of the kidnappers and shooting at him. Immediately afterwards he himself is shot down by Mcrae, Alison escapes with Anna. While pursuing Alison, Mcrae shoots Ed lying on the ground while passing. With the last of his strength, Chris can tell Andy and Darko that the kidnappers no longer have Anna. Then there is a fight between Darko and Kidd. Andy standing in front of the bar shoots Kidd, but Kidd can still escape.

Alison and Anna escape into a house. Mcrae follows them, shoots the man who lives there and sets the house on fire. Alison and Anna escape to the first floor. Mcrae follows them and there is a fight, whereby Alison finally manages to push Mcrae out of the window, which Mcrae does not survive. Alison saves Anna from the flames and then collapses unconscious. The approaching fire brigade managed to save the young woman. Andy finds Kidd in the car and overwhelms him. Together with Darko he brings Kidd to Rakovic in a forest. This humiliates the kidnapper of his daughter and will kill him painfully. In the ambulance, Anna thanks Alison for everything, whereupon the young woman can no longer hold back the tears.

Reviews

“'A Lonely Place To Die' is a genre mashup between survival drama and kidnapping thriller against the impressive backdrop of the Scottish Highlands. The result is a cool, exciting independent shocker who cleverly plays with the expectations of his audience, but sometimes lacks the feeling for the right timing. [...] The Scottish highlands have not been presented in a more exciting way for a long time. "

- Jan-Thilo Caesar, film starts

“As you would expect from a survival shocker, this thriller also plunges straight into the manhunt staged with well-dosed blood effects, which makes for an entertaining thrill. The kamikaze finale, which is getting out of hand, is just barely tolerable. [...] No-frills survival thriller that uses simple methods to continuously turn the tension screw up. "

“A LONELY PLACE TO DIE doesn't take prisoners, it's exciting, uncompromising and, above all, good enough that you shouldn't miss it; as long as you have the slightest sympathy for films in which an isolated group of ruthless captors are chased through the wilderness. [...] Merciless captors. Life-threatening terrain. Terror-laden 95 minutes. "

"Exciting, densely staged and excellently photographed thriller that never loses sight of its credible characters."
