Career

society

Aapo Halme, born in Helsinki , comes from the youth department of FC Honka Espoo . He made his debut in the top Finnish division on June 8, 2014 (11th matchday) in a 1-0 home win against Rovaniemi PS at the age of 16 when he came on for Antti Mäkijärvi in the 78th minute . This brief stint was his only one for Honka's first team in 2014 .

On January 14, 2015, he joined the HJK Helsinki . There he was assigned to the reserve team Klubi 04 , which played in the third highest Finnish division . On August 5, 2015 (18th matchday) he scored his first goal in a 2-1 away win against Sudet Kouvola . On September 13, 2015 (28th matchday) he made his debut for the first team in a 1-1 draw against FF Jaro . In this 2015 season, he played 15 league games for the reserves and two for the first team. For the following game year 2016 he was promoted to the first team, but was only used irregularly. He made 14 league appearances and was also used in four cup games.

On April 23, 2017 (4th matchday), he scored his first professional goal for the HJK in a 5-1 away win against JJK Jyväskylä . In June 2017 he made his breakthrough into the starting lineup, from which he dropped out in September. He completed 13 league games in which he was able to contribute a goal and won the double consisting of the championship of the cup with the club .

On January 3, 2018, the English second division Leeds United signed Aapo Halme and equipped the central defender with a four-year contract. This made him the fourth Finn after Sebastian Sorsa , Mika Väyrynen and Mikael Forssell to switch to the Whites . Shortly after his arrival, he suffered a serious foot injury and could no longer be used in the 2017/18 season . He started the 2018/19 season in the U23 team, where he attracted attention with his strong performances. Head coach Marcelo Bielsa promoted him to the first team in November 2018 due to injury problems in defense. On November 24, 2018 (18th matchday) he made his debut in a 2-0 home win against Bristol City in the championship, but was replaced by attacking player Samuel Sáiz after 64 minutes . On January 6, 2019, he scored his first goal for Leeds in a 2-1 away defeat by Queens Park Rangers in the 2018/19 FA Cup . After the return of the regular central defender Pontus Jansson , he was no longer considered and reassigned to the U23. He ended the 2018/19 season with five competitive appearances for the first team, in which he scored once.

On July 3, 2019, Aapo Halme moved to league rivals and neighboring club Barnsley FC , where he signed a three-year contract with an option for another year. On August 13, 2019, he made his debut for the Tykes in the 3-0 home defeat against fourth division Carlisle United in the 2019/20 EFL Cup . Shortly thereafter, Halme advanced into the starting line-up of head coach Daniel Stendel , but had a poor start to the season with his new club and the team got into the relegation battle early on. On October 2, 2019 (matchday 10), he scored his first goal in a 2-2 draw against Derby County . Even under Stendel's successors, the interim coach Adam Murray and the subsequently permanently employed Gerhard Struber , Halme kept his regular place in central defense.

National team

From September 2013 to April 2014, Aapo Halme played five international matches for the Finnish U16 national team . He then played in 10 U17 games until October 2014 , in which he scored a goal. From January 2015 to June 2016 he represented the U18 in nine test matches. At the same time, he was in action for the U19s from June 2015 , where he had seven compulsory missions until March 2017. He played for the U21 for the first time in June 2017 and led the selection as captain through the first five qualifying games for the U21 European Championship in 2021 in autumn 2019 .
