Adilabad ( Telugu : ఆదిలాబాదు జిల్లా ; Urdu آدل آباد ضلع) to this extent was a district in the state of Telangana in India until 2016 . The main town of the district was Adilabad .

History and creation

The Adilabad district was named after the ruler of the Bijapur Sultanate , Ali Adil Shah . The current district has only existed in this form since the British colonial era. In the past, individual areas were under the rule of several different dynasties at different times. In the 19th century, today's area belonged to the Sirpur-Tandur subdistrict, which in 1872 was made up of parts of Edlabad (Adilabad), Rajura and Sirpur to form a taluka . In 1905 this was converted into an independent district, the Adilabad District. With the administrative reform in the Indian state of Telangana in October 2016, the previous 10 districts were divided into 31 new districts. The then district of Adilabad was divided into the new districts of Adilabad , Kumaram Bheem , Mancherial and Nirmal .

geography

The district was on the northern border of Telangana and was framed in the north, east and west by the districts of Yeotmal and Chandrapur in the state of Maharashtra and in the south by the districts of Nizamabad and Karimnagar in Telangana.

The district had an area of 16,128 km 2 . A significant part of the total area (44.8 percent) is forested. 58.49 percent of the forest area is accounted for by teak trees.

The Western Ghats traverse the district over a length of 281.5 kilometers from northwest to south-east. In this area, the Mahbubghat is the highest peak.

The main river that drains the district is the Godavari River . Penganga , Wardha and Pranahita are other important rivers. The Kadam and the Peddavagu are tributaries of the Godavari. The Godavari is the largest river in the Deccan and flows into the district at Basara. The river forms the southern border of the district to the districts of Nizamabad and Karimnagar. The Penganga, Wardha and Pranahita form natural boundaries of the Adilabad district in the north and east. Several water reservoirs supply the population and agriculture.
