from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Adrian von Mynsicht (* around 1588 in Lügde or Ottenstein ; † October 29, 1638 in Wittenburg ), actually Adrian S (e) umenicht , was a German alchemist , doctor and chemist . He also published under his Hellenised name Tribudenius and under the anagrams Hinricus Madathanus and Harmannus Datichius (= Hadrianus Saumnicht).

Live and act

Adrian von Mynsicht was born as the son of Pastor Anton S (e) umenicht (1555–1643) and his wife Anna, born Trope, probably in Ottenstein in the Duchy of Braunschweig. On March 4, 1605 he enrolled at the University of Helmstedt and enrolled in Rostock in 1610 with the title of master's degree , where he received his doctorate in medicine . He then worked first in Magdeburg, before he became the Leibmedicus of Duke Julius Ernst of Braunschweig and Lüneburg in 1618 and of Duke Adolph Friedrich I of Mecklenburg-Schwerin in 1631 . He lived as a doctor in Wittenburg and is said to have died there on October 29, 1638.

Alchemist and pharmacist

Adrian von Mynsicht ran his own pharmacy and an independent medical practice. As a supporter of iatrochemical doctrine of Paracelsus , he wrote an alchemical allegory Aureum Seculum Redivivum and a pharmaceutical compilation with numerous composites , including the first described by him in 1630 tartar emetic . He referred to himself as "Comes Palatinus Caesareus" ( Imperial Count Palatinate ) and "Poeta Laureatus" ( laurel-crowned poet ).

portrait

An allegorical portrait made by the engraver Dirk Diricks from Hamburg shows his bust above a cartouche with the following Latin text:

Hadrianus â Minsicht
Est hic Mynsichtus, qui nunquam cernitur ulli,
Cernit eum nisi ovans in Chymicâ arte chorus.
Vivida mens illi est, hilaris frons, osq [ue] disertum,
Cor animans, plenum melle poetifico.
Illius in scriptis sunt naturae abdita mirae,
Miraclum mundi, dum sibi vixit, erat.
This one here is Mynsicht, who is never recognized by anyone
unless he is recognized by the crowd exulting in the art of alchemy.
He has a lively mind, a serene forehead and an eloquent mouth,
a feeling heart full of the honey of poetry.
In his writings are the secrets of wonderful nature;
he was himself a wonder of the world as long as he lived for himself.
