The Aeroporto de São Paulo / Congonhas - Deputado Freitas Nobre ( IATA code : CGH , ICAO code : SBSP ) is a Brazilian commercial airport in the urban area of São Paulo , Brazil . It is located on Avenida Washington Luís in the southern part of the city near the center.

history

In the 1930s, it was decided to build an airport that would not be affected by flooding when the Rio Tietê floods, as was the case with the Campo de Marte (Field of Mars). It opened in 1936 , the first flight had Rio de Janeiro as its destination and was operated by a VASP aircraft .

After the airport had reached its capacity limits due to the ever increasing number of passengers and the resulting ever denser air traffic , the São Paulo-Guarulhos airport to the northeast was built in 1985 . Since then, only domestic flights have started at the Aeroporto Internacional de Congonhas. Nevertheless, due to the relatively short runways and its central, already completely renovated location , CGH is still considered dangerous.

Due to the large number of passengers, a project to renovate and convert the airport was initiated by Infraero . This was to ensure that the capacity of 12 million passengers a year will continue to be met in the future. Implementation began in 2003; the first construction phase, the reconstruction of the arrival and departure areas and the installation of passenger boarding bridges for easier boarding and alighting was completed on August 15, 2004. The second construction phase, with changes in the handling area, the construction of a parking garage for over 3000 vehicles and an improvement in the flow of traffic, was completed in early 2007. From February to June 2007, both runways were also renewed.

Airlines and Destinations

The airport is only served by the Brazilian airlines Azul Linhas Aéreas , Gol Linhas Aéreas and LATAM Airlines Brasil in domestic traffic.

Incidents

  • On March 13, 1948, a Douglas DC-3A of the Brazilian Cruzeiro do Sul ( aircraft registration PP-CBX ) collided with the Sierra Cristais ridge, 32 kilometers from the destination airport, while approaching São Paulo-Congonhas airport. All 6 occupants, 4 crew members and 2 passengers, were killed.
  • On August 8, 1951, was Curtiss C-46F-1-CU Commando of Pan Am (N74176) irreparably damaged when they shot out at the airport Congonhas about the end of the runway. All three inmates survived.
  • On September 23, 1959, a Saab Scandia operated by VASP (PP-SQV) did not gain sufficient height when taking off from São Paulo-Congonhas Airport and crashed almost 5 kilometers south of the airport into a residential area. The plane was on its way to Rio de Janeiro-Santos Dumont Airport . All 20 inmates died.
  • On March 6, 1961, a Lockheed L-1049G Super Constellation of the Spanish Iberia (EC-AIP) fell to the ground at São Paulo-Congonhas Airport in strong downdrafts shortly before the runway and caught fire. All 46 occupants, 10 crew members and 36 passengers survived.
  • On January 15, 1963, an engine failed on a Convair CV-240-0 of the Cruzeiro do Sul (PP-CEV) after taking off from São Paulo-Congonhas Airport. The plane crashed four kilometers south of the take-off airport in a house. Of the 45 occupants, 6 were killed, a crew member and 5 passengers. In addition, 7 people were killed on the ground.
  • On May 3, 1963, a Convair CV-340-59 of the Brazilian Cruzeiro do Sul (PP-CDW) caught fire in engine 2 (right). The pilots returned to the São Paulo-Congonhas departure airport. About one kilometer east of it, the aircraft took the aircraft nose very steeply upwards (45 degrees); it stalled and crashed. The cause was an improper procedure when moving the propeller out of the sail position . Of the 50 occupants, 37 were killed, 4 of the 5 crew members and 33 of the 45 passengers.
  • On September 15, 1968, a Vickers Viscount 827 of the Brazilian VASP (PP-SRE) had an accident on a training flight 7.5 kilometers from the departure airport São Paulo-Congonhas. Take-offs and landings with touch-and-go as well as the simulated failure of one and two engines were practiced. The two pilots, the only occupants, were killed, as was a person on the ground.
  • On February 27, 1975, an Embraer EMB 110 C of the VASP (PP-SBE) had an engine failure shortly after taking off from São Paulo-Congonhas Airport. The captain made a left turn, but could not maintain the altitude. A short time later there was a loss of control, the machine crashed 1.5 kilometers northwest of the airport into a row of houses in the urban area of São Paulo and exploded. All 15 inmates of the Embraer were killed. The cause of the engine failure could not be determined despite intensive investigations. It was the first incident involving an Embraer EMB 110 (see also VASP flight 640 ) .
  • On October 31, 1996, a Fokker 100 belonging to the Brazilian TAM Linhas Aéreas (PT-MRK) crashed shortly after taking off from Congonhas after the plane had streaked an apartment building and several other houses. All 90 passengers and the six crew members on board as well as three other people on the ground were killed in the accident (see also TAM Linhas Aéreas flight 402 ) .
  • On July 17, 2007 an Airbus A320 of the TAM Linhas Aéreas (PR-MBK) coming from Porto Alegre with 181 passengers and six crew members crashed while landing on runway 35L of the São Paulo-Congonhas airport. After touchdown, the aircraft pulled to the left, left the rain-soaked runway, shot over the airport grounds and crashed into a cargo handling building located outside. A total of 199 people were killed in this aircraft accident , all 187 aircraft occupants and 12 people on the ground. It was the most serious aircraft accident in the history of Brazil and caused a comprehensive discussion about Brazilian air traffic control, the infrastructure of the airports and in particular the congestion of Congonhas Airport in its current location in the middle of densely built-up urban areas (see also TAM Linhas Aéreas flight 3054 ) .

Trivia

  • In the 1970s, a hall with a view of the runway was often used for graduation ceremonies, weddings and the like.
