Ako Haarbeck

Hans-Jakob "Ako" Haarbeck (born January 20, 1932 in Hoerstgen ; † October 2, 2017 in Detmold ) was a German Protestant theologian , pastor, regional superintendent of the Lippe regional church and author.

Live and act

Haarbeck grew up reformed in a parsonage - with a Pietist character. From 1952 he studied Protestant theology in Wuppertal , Bonn and Göttingen . In Göttingen he received his doctorate in 1959 under Otto Weber with his dissertation on the Swabian revival preacher Ludwig Hofacker . He completed his vicariate in Wuppertal-Elberfeld , Duisburg and Dierdorf . During this time he volunteered at Südwestfunk and studied for a semester at the Ecumenical Institute Bossey . Between 1961 and 1969 he was parish pastor in Dierdorf and youth and school pastor of the Wied church district, then pastor of the Evangelical Reformed parish of Nordhorn in the county of Bentheim and from 1971 superintendent . In 1974 he founded the ecumenical meeting and study center " Frenswegen Monastery Foundation ". In 1980 he moved to the Lippische Landeskirche , where he served as regional superintendent until his retirement in 1996.

Haarbeck was a member of the executive committee of the Missionary Services Working Group from 1980 to 1989 and chairman of its youth chamber between 1981 and 1985. From 1985 to 1994 he was a member of the EKD Council . From 1980 he volunteered as deputy chairman of the Reformed Federation , from 1987 to 1999 as chairman of the German Bible Society and from 1992 to 1998 as chairman of the board of the joint venture of Protestant journalism . From 1968 to 1989, Haarbeck was the author of the “Biblical Weeks for the Congregation”.

Ako Haarbeck was married to Hildegard Weber. The couple had three children and last lived in Bonn .

Honors

  • For the promotion of theological education in Eastern Europe, he received an honorary doctorate from the Reformed College in Debrecen / Hungary and the Theological Seminary in Cluj-Napoca / Romania, from where students came every year for internships in Lippe parishes.
