al-Uqsur ( Arabic محافظة الأقصر, DMG muḥāfaẓat al-Uqṣur ) or Luxor ( Egyptian-Arabic Muḥāfẓet El Loʾṣor ) has been an independent governorate in Egypt since December 7, 2009 , after having existed as a tourist governorate since 2006 . It covers 2960 km 2 and had around 1,250,209 inhabitants in 2017.

The capital of the youngest Egyptian governorate is Luxor . Some of the most important archaeological sites in Egypt are located in and around Luxor. The area previously belonged to the Qina Governorate .

location

The governorate extends on the western bank of the Nile from Qamūlā in the north to Esna in the south and on the eastern bank of the Nile from al-Madāmūd in the north to Esna in the south. The cities of Esna and Armant now also belong to the governorate .
