Albert Maria Weiss (pseudonym Heinrich von der Clana ; born April 22, 1844 in Indersdorf , Upper Bavaria , † August 16, 1925 in Freiburg im Üechtland ) was a German Catholic theologian .

Life

After attending the Benedictine grammar school in Munich , Weiss studied theology and was ordained a Catholic priest in 1867 . After his doctorate as Dr. theol. in Munich (1870) he was appointed Lyzeal professor in 1873. In 1876 he entered the Dominican order in Graz and taught at the Austrian house institution of the order. In 1890 he became professor of social science at the newly founded University of Friborg / Switzerland , first at the philosophical, from 1890 to 1892 at the legal and from 1890 to 1892 and from 1895 to 1919 at the theological faculty. In 1897 he received the chair for apologetics , in 1896/1897 and 1902/1903 he was dean of the theological faculty. Between 1892 and 1895 he was superior and professor in Graz and Vienna. His main research interests were patristics , medieval scholasticism and mysticism . As a Catholic publicist, he fought against political liberalism. Within the church he was a sharp critic of reform Catholicism and modernism as well as any activity by Catholic lay people that was independent of the church hierarchy, for example in Christian trade unions and Christian social parties. In this regard, he was one of the main ideas behind the anti-modernist encyclical Pascendi . Weiss supported the ideas of Karl von Vogelsang and was close to the Union de Friborg , a Catholic association that dealt with social and economic issues. In addition to his teaching post, he took on diplomatic missions in Luxembourg and Austria.
