Alcafache is a municipality ( freguesia ) in the Portuguese district ( concelho ) of Mangualde with 921 inhabitants (as of June 30, 2011).
history
Parts of a Roman road have remained from Roman times . The place name comes from the Arabic period from the 8th century AD. In the course of the consolidation of the independent kingdom of Portugal from 1140 , Alcafache became the seat of its own district. The use of the thermal springs bubbling here has been documented since the 15th century.
Alcafache received city rights from King Manuel I in 1514 . The district was dissolved around 1527 and continued to exist as an independent municipality in the Mangualde district.
The community became known nationwide when the Sud-Express collided head-on with a regional train on September 11, 1985 .
Culture and sights
The monuments of the municipality include a number of sacred buildings and stone crosses, historic houses and the manor Quinta de Santa Eufémia , a stone fountain and two primary school buildings. The parish church Igreja Matriz de Alcafache (also Igreja de São Vicente ), which dates back to a church dating back to 1774, should also be mentioned.
The Roman bridge over the Rio Dão , which is also listed, is well worth seeing .
administration
The following localities are located in the municipality ( Freguesia ) Alcafache:
- Casal Mendo
- Casal Sendinho
- Aldeia de Carvalho
- Tibaldinho
- Mosteirinho
- Banho (thermal bath)
economy
Viticulture is carried out here by over 400 winegrowers, and the community is part of the heritage-protected wine-growing region of the Dão . Agriculture in general continues to be an important factor, especially vegetable growing. Local flocks of sheep provide the milk for cheeses that are already part of the Queijo Serra da Estrela .
Tourism should also be mentioned, especially in connection with the Termas de Alcafache thermal baths , but also in rural tourism .
