Children's book publisher Berlin

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The children's book publisher Berlin was a German publisher based in East Berlin .

History until 1989

The publishing house was founded in 1949 on June 1, International Children's Day , on the advice of the Soviet Military Administration in Germany (SMAD) by the party executive of the Socialist Unity Party of Germany (SED) in East Berlin and subordinated to the pioneer organization Ernst Thälmann , which had been founded the year before . However, the SED remained the owner without the employees knowing about it.

The then head of the adult education department at Volk und Wissen Verlag , Günther Schmidt, was commissioned to build up the publishing house . From 1949 until his retirement in 1975 he was director of the children's book publisher. The vast majority of all GDR children's books were published here, and they often received awards as the most beautiful books in the GDR . Four titles from the mathematical student library were published by the children's book publisher . From 1954 to 1960 the children's magazine Our Robinson was published. The publishing house was Behrenstrasse 40/41 in 1080 Berlin; the building was transferred to the SED in 1963.

Several other publishers have merged with the publisher over the years:

  • 1963 Alfred Holz Verlag, from 1974 continued as Edition Holz,
  • 1975 Karl Nitzsche Verlag, continued as Imprint (picture books up to eight years),
  • 1994 Postreiter Verlag Halle.

After the turn

After the fall of the Wall in the GDR , the publishing house was converted into a GmbH, greatly reduced in size, and successively given three unsuccessful managing directors by the Treuhandanstalt . Some executives worked out a management buy-out concept that was rejected by the trust. The editor-in-chief Katrin Pieper then teamed up with the delivery company LKG and founded the LeiV Leipziger Kinderbuchverlag . In 1992 the children's book publisher was sold by the trustee lawyer Karsten Völker to the Munich Meisinger publishing group (Meisinger, Middelhauve, Sellier and others), where it was continued - with Völker as managing director - as an imprint under the name Der Kinderbuch-Verlag Berlin . In 2002 it was taken over by Beltz & Gelberg (under the imprint of Der KinderbuchVerlag ). Part of the former backlist is being relocated by the LeiV Leipziger Kinderbuchverlag .
