AlieNation is an animated film by director Laura Lehmus on the subject of puberty from 2014. The animated short documentary uses the original sound of interviews Laura Lehmus and Dirk Böll conducted with adolescents. The teenagers were designed and animated by several animators using different techniques: some figures were drawn, others collaged and still others formed from plasticine .

Title and content

The title brings to mind aliens , beings from a strange world. This film is about the feeling of “not being entirely of this world”. But the protagonists are at home on earth: young people at the age "when pimples sprout, bodies mutate and the voice croaks". These “strangers or those who are alienated from themselves” turn “their innermost outside” in the film. “Together, these aliens form an alien nation.” What is conveyed is the age-typical “feeling of powerlessness to be at the mercy of one's body, since one has no control over the changes.” AlieNation takes the feeling of alienation from mind and body literally: “From the young adults become the alien in their own body. ”The disintegration of inside and outside is also discussed:“ You are constantly expected to do what you do not understand, you think you are ugly, repulsive and strange. Just like an alien. ”The young people talk about mood swings, their parents' efforts to control and how to avoid them.

The texts are alienated by the contrast between what is seen and what is heard: “Suddenly what the adolescents utter sounds completely absurd, sometimes funny or even cruel, for example when a goggle-eyed , extraterrestrial animal with a squeaky girl's voice from his tangible argument on the Schoolyard reports. "

role models

AlieNation has similarities with the clay-animated short film Creature Comforts from 1989. While zoo animals made of plasticine reflect their keeping conditions there, Lehmus put the statements of teenagers about their puberty problems into their characters' mouths.

Production and publication

The figures were designed and animated by Aike Arndt, Anna Blaszczyk, Jan Goldfuß, Vera Lalyko, Matthias von Lonski, Christian Schlierkamp and Stefan Schomerus.

The underlying interviews were recorded by Laura Lehmus and Dirk Böll at three schools, including a 9th grade in Bremerhaven . César Fernández Borrás was responsible for the sound, the composer Sebastian Müller was responsible for the sound design and mixing , and Dirk Böll was the sound engineer.

The film was produced as DCP with 16: 9 and Dolby Digital 5.1 .

The film premiered on October 21, 2014 at the Hof Film Festival . The first rental was by Interfilm Berlin . AlieNation is distributed in Germany by Matthias-Film . The film was broadcast on 3sat on May 12, 2016 .

intention

With this film Laura Lehmus wanted to show how smart and self-confident these teenagers are. She wanted to open up a glimpse into a phase of life full of changes, breaks, transitions, resistance and freedom, to which everyone can relate.

advancement

The production of the film was funded by the Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg . The FFA film funding agency supported the production with reference funding for short films with € 67,558.

reception

The entertainment value of the film has been highlighted several times: The jury of the German Short Film Award was, AlieNation was a very entertaining short film about adolescence, even in the time of the film when it was "very funny" means.

The large group of addressees received special mention. The film succeeds "not only in addressing young people, but also in making adults laugh and think".

The educational content for adults and young people was also recognized: the film, according to the jury of the German Short Film Award, sharpens the focus on the "sometimes awkwardly formulated development problems of adolescents", but also offers "educationally valuable approaches to self-reflection". The German film and media rating judged that a film had been made “that, with all its crisp ideas, sums up the emotional and life situation of the young people exactly. There is no better way to describe this special phase of life. ”In the Süddeutsche Zeitung, Oliver Reinhard emphasized the film's originality and educational value. He saw "a welcome change from most real-life films about children working on the standard fate of children in need, preferably divorce victims" and described it as "a delicious, touching 'study' with high educational value, especially for parents".

The German Film and Media Assessment also justified the award of the title Particularly Valuable with the fact that the “extremely clever and reflective statements” had been translated into animations “that completely fit the subject of the film”. The “successful bridge between funny animation technique and honest interviews” was also praised elsewhere. The "lovingly and detailed" designed figures were particularly well received.

When Independent Days Film Festival in Karlsruhe, where the film was excellent, it was said that it was the director managed to "the genre of documentary fiction develop".
