All Star is a song by the American rock band Smash Mouth . Released as the second single on their album Astro Lounge on May 4, 1999 , it is one of the group's most successful songs and also made it to # 4 on the Billboard Hot 100.

composition

All Star is played in the F major key at a rate of 104 beats per minute. According to a 2017 interview, songwriter Greg Camp was keen to explore multiple styles and appeal to social classes with the song. These include the social battle cry of the song, the form of a sports and fan base anthem, the poetic lyrics, the rousing melody and the design of the music video.

Music video

The music video ( directed by McG ) features cameo appearances by cast members from the 1999 film Mystery Men . These include William H. Macy , Ben Stiller , Hank Azaria , Diane Rehm , Paul Reubens , Kel Mitchell , Janeane Garofalo , Doug Jones and Dane Cook . As of July 2018, the video has received over 170 million views on the Smash Mouth YouTube channel.

The video begins with the group of men who introduce themselves with their unusual superpowers at a club for superhero roles . However, none of them are really suitable for the club. When a man dressed as Elvis Presley introduces himself , Harwell enters and throws the man out. The jury is shocked and impressed by Harwell's performance and therefore wants to accept him into the club. Harwell then starts singing the song while walking and dancing down a sidewalk.

He stops with two children and then jumps on a limo while the other band members perform in front of a house. However, a fire breaks out on the top floor of the house where the band is playing and two women shout for help. Harwell rescues a dog from the house and the ladies are relieved that the dog is safe.

Two girls are now standing on a motorcycle and Harwell approaches them. Then he takes them on a jaunt through the neighborhood and the band performs in the parking garage. Meanwhile, there is a race between the band members in the limo and the club members in an older car. After the two cars stop and the passengers fight each other, the singer overtakes them on the motorcycle. The old car crashed into a trailer and Harwell saves his bandmates from the club members attack by taking them on his motorcycle, leaving the two girls angry.

When the band arrives in the neighborhood, they see an overturned school bus lying on the floor with a woman lying underneath. When two cheerleaders cheer and dance in the distance, Harwell pulls the bus back onto the street so the woman can break free. It turns out that she is "Miss All Star". Then she and a group of students and their teacher, who is sitting in the school bus, waves to the band. The scene then changes to the band playing the last parts of the song in a garage. At the end of the music video, the club members also applaud the band.

Pop and net culture

The song is used in a scene by Mystery Men in which new superheroes are to be recruited for the team.

The song is also used in the Shrek franchise, particularly during the opening credits of the first film that introduces the title character. As a result, the song is often associated with Shrek in net culture . It has therefore also become a popular internet meme , which has been widely distributed, especially since 2016. The Memes usually refer to remixes , parodies and other artistic and humorous adaptations of the song and the music video, for example, a re-harmonization in the style of a typical Bach - chorale .

At the end of the movie Rat Race , Smash Mouth appear as themselves and also play "All Star".
