Allen Midgette (* 2. February 1939 as all Joseph Midgett in Camden , New Jersey ; † 16th June 2021 in Woodstock , New York ) was an American actor , painter and author . He lived until the end as a freelance painter in Woodstock , New York . Midgette was best known as a performer in Andy Warhol's films, among others he appeared in his films ★★★★ , Lonesome Cowboysand Nude Restaurant .

Life

As a young man, Midgette lived in New York , where he studied acting. He applied for the role of Tony in the film version of West Side Story , but was only given an extra role . In 1960 he traveled to Europe and starred in Italian film productions, including La Commare Secca (1962) and Before the Revolution (Prima della rivoluzione, 1964) by Bernardo Bertolucci . They soon became acquainted with Bertolucci, Pier Paolo Pasolini , the writer Alberto Moravia and his wife Elsa Morante .

After returning to the USA, he met Warhol in 1967 through Susan Bottomly (International Velvet), who invited him to the Factory , Warhol's studio. On a trip to Philadelphia together . it was filmed with Ivy Nicholson , Ultra Violet and Mary Woronov , parts of the footage were used for the 24-hour film ★★★★ . In 1967, Midgette played Andy Warhol at a series of lectures at American colleges . When this was discovered by a viewer, it created a nationally perceived scandal, and Warhol then had to give his guest lectures himself.

Even after separating from the pop art artist, Midgette remained active as an actor, even if only in supporting roles: in 1970 he played a soldier in Bertolucci's Strategy of the Spider , in 1976 a vagabond in the film 1900 , and he also appeared in Nanni films Loy , Gianni Amico , Jean Luigi Calderon and Daniel Cohn-Bendit . In 1970 he was seen together with Götz George in the Ostwind production of the collective “Groupe Dziga Vertov”.
