Aloys Henhöfer

Aloys Henhöfer (born July 11, 1789 in Völkersbach near Ettlingen , † December 5, 1862 in Spöck ) was a German theologian of the revival movement .

Life

Henhöfer was the fourth child of a Catholic farming family in the margraviate of Baden . He attended high school in Rastatt from 1802 and studied at the University of Freiburg im Breisgau from 1811 . In 1814 he came to the seminary in Meersburg , where he was ordained a Catholic priest in 1815. As a private tutor he came to Baron Julius von Gemmingen-Steinegg (1774–1842) at Steinegg Castle near Mühlhausen an der Würm , where in 1818, after the pastor's death, he also received the pastor's position.

In poor Mühlhausen, smuggling and hunting crimes were the order of the day, and the youth showed signs of neglect. Henhöfer preached the “pure gospel” across denominational boundaries and attracted both Catholic and Protestant believers to his sermons. In 1819 he made contact with the Pietist Brethren Community of Korntal , but in the same year had to answer for the first time before the episcopal vicariate in Bruchsal because of his sermon content. He increasingly broke away from the Catholic Church, so that he was finally suspended from office in 1822, arrested in Bruchsal and faced with 80 charges. After he had presented a pamphlet with his views on the Holy Scriptures to the Vicariate, he was expelled from the Catholic Church in 1822.

In 1823 Henhöfer finally converted to Protestantism. He was followed by 44 families with a total of 220 people from his former community in Mühlhausen, including the barons of Gemmingen-Steinegg . Julius von Gemmingen-Steinegg had a Protestant church built in Mühlhausen in 1830 and a Protestant school with a teacher and pastor's apartment set up. However, at the endeavors of the Catholic church leadership, Henhöfer was denied a position as a Protestant pastor in Mühlhausen. Rather, he was transferred to Graben near Karlsruhe.

After a sermon in the palace church in Karlsruhe in 1827, he was transferred to the parish in Spöck and Staffort , where he worked until his death in 1862. From 1830 he fought there for the Augsburg Confession and against the introduction of a rationalistic catechism .

With Henhöfer's participation, several orphanages and rescue houses were built from 1848 , including the Hardt Foundation, as well as two deaconess houses in Karlsruhe and Nonnenweier . In 1849 the Evangelical Association for Inner Mission of the Augsburg Confession ("AB Association") was established. In 1856 Henhöfer received an honorary doctorate from Heidelberg University .

He died in 1862 of pneumonia and was buried in Spöck.
