The Völklingen station is an important station in the urban area of the Saarland medium- sized town Völklingen . Today it is only served by local passenger trains on the Saar line between Trier and Saarbrücken .

Geographical location

The station is located south-west of downtown Völklingen on the southern ring road . To the west is the world cultural heritage site Völklinger Hütte , whose sidings were served by the railway systems of the Saar line.

history

The station was opened on December 16, 1858 as part of the construction of the Saar line. In 1860 the first station building was built, which was located east of the current building. During the Franco-Prussian War , the station was the target of French artillery fire, which was supposed to interrupt rail operations. In 1872 a branch line to the Viktoria mine in Püttlingen was built, which led out of the Saar line east of the station.

The Völklingen – Thionville railway was put into operation in 1880. In 1893 the station building , which had become too small, was replaced by today's old station . The railway to Püttlingen was extended to Lebach in 1911 . This route was discontinued in 1985, today the section near Völklingen is used as a cycle path . During the heyday of the nearby Völklinger Hütte, the train station served as an important transport hub for ironworkers and raw materials .

The Saar line was electrified from the mid-1960s. The new building of a reception building was inaugurated in 1992 right next to the existing one after discussions about a new building had been going on since 1975. The old station was placed under monument protection. Völklingen was served by interregional trains until 2002 , since then it has only been served by regional trains.

From 1909 to 1959 the Völklingen tram ran to the station.

The station has a total of 5 platform tracks, of which tracks 4 and 5 on the outermost central platform are now used as siding for shunting locomotives to and from the Völklinger Hütte, and some freight tracks on which trains from the Völklingen steelworks are dispatched. A barrier-free access exists to the remaining two platforms of the tracks. 1 to 3

Völklingen has a track plan pushbutton interlocking that was put into operation in 1964. The operating points in Luisenthal , Bous and Ensdorf are controlled remotely.

Built in 1893-94 reception building Old Station stands with equipment and pedestrian tunnel under the rail tracks, including a porch of 1950/60 under monument protection . The three-part building was made of exposed brickwork on large-format sandstone plinths. In 1997, the State Development Company Saarland (LEG Saar) acquired the 1,600 square meter station building and modernized it for 2.9 million euros, some of which was funded by the state, the Federal Republic of Germany and the European Union . With a multimedia show, it will serve as the “entrance gate” to the Völklingen Ironworks World Heritage Site. The ceiling beams and the wall medallions with territorial coats of arms that were attached in 1893 have been restored. Since 1998 a theater and cinema, the tourist information of the city of Völklingen and a restaurant have been set up, and since 2002 an EDP training center of the Völklingen adult education center.

Freight depot

The passenger station is located in the middle of extensive track systems that were used for the freight traffic of the neighboring iron and steel works . In 1970 Völklingen was the destination of the heaviest freight train of the German Federal Railroad at the time . South-west of the railway tracks is a building of the freight depot with hipped and on both sides giebelten side projections . The wagon maintenance shop at Völklingen station, built around 1900, is part of the Völklinger Hütte ensemble, which is a listed building, in the pig iron production area.

business

The station of station category 3 belongs to the Saarländischer Verkehrsverbund (SaarVV) and is located in the large honeycomb 191, which covers the entire urban area of Völklingen. The next more important train stations are in Saarbrücken , Saarlouis and Dillingen . The station is now only served by regional trains.

Connection to the bus system

In front of the train station there is a bus station with bus connections to all parts of Völklingen, France and Lebach , Püttlingen , Großrosseln , Riegelsberg , Heusweiler , Wadgassen and Überherrn . However, bus operation is usually limited to the main and off-peak hours on working days. On Sundays and public holidays there is little or no bus service in many parts of the city.

Previous operation

Up to and including the 2014/15 timetable year, rail traffic in the southwest was organized fundamentally differently than it is today. The RE1 (Saarbrücken - Trier - Koblenz), RE11 (Koblenz - Trier (- Saarbrücken)) and RE60 ((Trier -) Saarbrücken - Kaiserslautern - Mannheim) lines were operated in Regional Express ; In regional rail operations, the RB71 line ran every 60 minutes between Trier and Homburg, and on the main Dillingen - St. Ingbert line even every 30 minutes.

With the introduction of the next stage of the Rhineland-Palatinate cycle in 2015, an immense improvement in the offer was achieved. The RE-operation in the Southwest is modern Stadler Flirt - railcars under the brand SÜWEX operated whose line RE1 since the former lines RE1, RE11 and RE60 unites in itself and allows a connection from Koblenz via Saarbrücken to Mannheim without Umstiege. The regional trains on the Saartalbahn were connected to the RheinNeckar S-Bahn . The RB71 line runs every 60 minutes from Trier to Homburg (there is a connection to the S1 line towards Osterburken ). The RB70 line also runs every hour between Merzig and Kaiserslautern (connection to the S2 line to Mosbach ).
