The border between Missouri and Arkansas and thus between northern and southern states runs exactly through the town of Border City. This has given this city a neutral status. Mayor and owner of the local lead mine, Delilah Courtney, has managed to keep uniformed troops within five miles of town.

Sally Maris is on her way to Border City by stagecoach to meet her brother, the saloon owner Bill. The carriage is first checked and then escorted by a patrol of Northern State soldiers . Suddenly the group is attacked by the southern guerrilla group around William Quantrill. The attackers shoot the soldiers and now accompany the carriage in turn. Young Jesse James was injured in the attack and is being treated in Sally's carriage.

When she arrives in town, Sally goes to her brother's saloon, who is surprised but delighted to see her. However, Bill is also shocked by the arrival of William's Quadrill, who kidnapped his fiancée Kate two years ago . Kate is now married to William and is his constant companion. When Kate provokes Bill, Bill wants revenge and takes up a gun. In self-defense, the mine foreman Lance Horton has to shoot Bill to prevent worse.

Sally then inherits the saloon. Lance, full of guilt towards Sally, tries to offer her his help, but she refuses. Kate is jealous of Sally and the position she now has in town, and that two men, Cole Younger and Lance, are trying to find her.

The mayor, who doubts Quantrill's neutrality, tells him to leave the city, on the other hand she would order Union troops into the city. However, William is unimpressed. Quantrill tried by Lance lead from the mine to get this is a secret officer of the Confederacy and has frequently worried his troops illegally lead. Lance, however, is aware that Quantrill is now working on his own account and refuses to support him. Quantrill has to blackmail Lance into betraying his activity as a spy in the city.

When the Confederate Army approaches the city, Kate wants to sing Dixie in the saloon . Since this would encourage the dispute between the residents, Sally tries to prevent Kate from doing so. There is a tangible fight between the women, which Sally can ultimately decide for herself.

Lance tells Sally he's a southern spy and confesses his love to her. He also reveals his plan to drive out Quantrill with the nearby army. While trying to leave the city to get to his troops, he is caught by Jesse and Younger.

Quantrill now wants to get to the lead mine with Lance as soon as possible. Kate wants to get revenge on Sally beforehand and shoot her. However, Jesse warns Sally and gives her his revolver for good luck. In the following duel on the open road, Sally injured Kate's hand and thus emerged as the winner again. It seems suspicious to the mayor that Lance is leaving the city with Quantrill, so she calls the Union Army for help. This cuts off Quantrill's path. When Jesse realizes that Cole is actually planning to kidnap Sally, he gives Lance a gun and lets him walk in the commotion.

In the shooting for Sally, Lance is badly wounded by Cole, but Sally cannot kidnap because the fight with the Yankees degenerates and the gang has to flee the city. Sally brings the Kate left behind by her husband into the saloon. This disguises itself in front of the Union troops, heavily made up and in a chic dress now as a saloon lady, warbling a song. The two women have spoken out and Kate rediscovered her love for Bill, now Sally recognizes Kate as the woman from her brother's old letters.

To save the injured Lance from being arrested as a spy by the Union troops, Sally makes a confession in which she ascribes the espionage work to the late Bill and herself as his successor. While she is surrendering to the mayoress and the Union troops, the saloon ladies bring Lance to the rebel army encamped in front of the city . At the last moment, Kate saves Sally from being lynched when she tells the mayor and townspeople the truth and reveals her identity to the soldiers. She escapes and can finally escape the soldiers to New Orleans .

After the war ends, Lance rides into town to be happy with Sally.
