Amphoe Khiri Rat Nikhom ( Thai อำเภอ คีรีรัฐนิคม ) is a district ( Amphoe - administrative district) in the west of Surat Thani Province . The Surat Thani Province is located in the southern region of Thailand .

geography

The western part of the district lies in the Phuket mountain range, on which the border between the provinces of Surat Thani and Ranong runs, while the eastern part consists mainly of flat land. The major rivers in the district are the Phum Duang and the Khlong Yan.

The neighboring amphoe and areas are (clockwise from north): Vibhavadi , Phunphin , Khian Sa , Phanom and Ban Ta Khun . All are in Surat Thani Province.

history

The city of Khiri Rat Nikhom was first mentioned in the reign of King Mongkut (Rama IV.) , When it was still an insignificant mueang under Takua Pa - at that time one of the historical city-states (mueang) with historical roots going back to the Srivijaya Empire - and Was part of the kingdom of Nakhon Si Thammarat . The Thesaphiban administrative reform of 1890 made it a district in the province of Chaya, today's Surat Thai.

In 1917 the district was renamed Tha Khanon ( ท่า ขนอน ), as the headquarters of the administration was in this area. On April 12, 1961, it was given its historic name again.

Khiri Rat Nikhom is the end of a junction on the South Line of the State Railway of Thailand . This junction was originally supposed to lead from the train station in Phunphin to Phuket, but further expansion was stopped in 1956 for lack of money.

Local administration

Tha Khanon ( เทศบาล ตำบล ท่า ขนอน ) is a small town ( Thesaban Tambon ) in the district, it consists of the entire Tambon Tha Khanon.

There are also eight "Tambon Administrative Organizations " ( องค์การ บริหาร ส่วน ตำบล - Tambon Administrative Organizations, TAO) for the Tambon or the parts of Tambon in the district that do not belong to any city.
