Amphoe Mueang Surat Thani ( Thai : อำเภอ เมือง สุราษฎร์ธานี ) is a district ( amphoe - administrative district) in the central part of Surat Thani Province . The Surat Thani Province is located in the southern region of Thailand .

The district of Amphoe Mueang Surat Thani includes the provincial capital Surat Thani .

geography

Surat Thani is located on the east coast of the Gulf of Thailand in the middle of a fertile plain at the mouth of the Tapi River . The distance to the capital Bangkok is more than 640 kilometers.

Neighboring counties (clockwise from the east): the Amphoe Kanchanadit , Ban Na San , Ban Na Doem and Phunphin . All Amphoe are in Surat Thani Province.

In the east of the district, the Maenam Thathong (Thathong River) represents the natural border with the neighboring Kanchanadit district, the border with Phunphin is partly the western arm of Maenam Tapi. The Khun Thale is a small lake in the center of the district. The wildlife sanctuary Khao Tha Phet (English: "Khao Tha Phet Non-hunting Area") protects an area of ​​4.65 square kilometers on a hill south of the city of Surat Thani.

The Khun Thale swamp in the south of the district is the headwaters of two small rivers that meander through the city : Khlong Makham Tia and Khlong Tha Kup.

history

Surat Thani has been settled since prehistoric times, as is shown by paleolithic tool finds. The small town ( Mueang ) Chaiya not far from Surat Thani was an important city of the Srivijaya Empire , possibly even the capital for a time.

In 1897 the Mueang Chaiya and Kanchanadit were formed into a single province called Chaiya, the administration of which was based in Ban Don (roughly: Higher Village ).

The city got its current name in 1915 from King Vajiravudh (Rama VI.) , Which translates as the city ​​of good people , as the residents were very devout Buddhists .

In 1932 Surat Thani was administratively a so-called sanitary district (Sukhaphiban - สุขาภิบาล ), on December 7, 1935 it was raised to a city ( Thesaban Mueang ) with an area of ​​2.67 km². This area was increased to 6.95 km² on October 14, 1958, and again on December 22, 1994 to 68.97 km². On May 4, 2007, Surat Thani became a city ( Thesaban Nakhon ) .

Local administration

There is one major city in the county ( เทศบาล นคร - Thesaban Nakhon ):

  • Surat Thani ( เทศบาล นคร สุราษฎร์ธานี ) consists of parts of the Tambon Talat, the entire Tambon Bang Kung, as well as parts of the Tambon Makham Tia, Bang Bai Mai, Bang Chana and Khlong Chanak.
