Amphoe Wiang Sa ( Thai : เวียงสระ ) is a district ( amphoe - administrative district) in the southeast of Surat Thani Province . The Surat Thani Province is located in the southern region of Thailand .

Neighboring districts (from west clockwise): Amphoe Phrasaeng , Khian Sa and Ban Na San in Surat Thani province and Amphoe Phipun , Chawang and Tham Phannara the province of Nakhon Si Thammarat .

The Maenam Tapi (Tapi River) forms the western border of the district. Smaller rivers in a circle are the Khlong Nam Thao ( คลอง น้ำ เฒ่า ), the Khlong Tan ( คลอง ตาล ) and the Khlong Chanuan ( คลอง ฉนวน ). In the west of the district the land slopes down to the Tapi Plain, while in the east are the hills of the Nakhon Si Thammarat mountain range.

The northeast of the district is protected in the Tai Rom Yen National Park ( อุทยานแห่งชาติ ใต้ ร่มเย็น ).

history

Wiang Sa was originally a smaller city-state ( Mueang ) in the kingdom of Nakhon Si Thammarat after the fall of the Srivijaya Empire at the end of the 13th century .

During the thesaphiban administrative reform at the end of the 19th century, it was converted into a district called Khlong Tan ( คลอง ตาล ). Shortly afterwards in 1896, however, Wiang Sa was downgraded to a tambon in Lamphun County, today's Amphoe Ban Na San . On March 10, 1968 Wiang Sa became a subdistrict ( King Amphoe ) by separating the tambon Wiang Sa and Thung Luang from the Ban Na San district. On November 17, 1971, Wiang Sa was promoted to Amphoe.

Wiang Sa District was a center of the Communist Party's uprising against the government during the 1970s . On February 16, communist fighters killed Princess Vibhavadi Rangsit , a confidante of King Bhumibol Adulyadej and lady-in-waiting of Queen Sirikit , who was committed to the development of the provinces in the south. She was traveling in a helicopter to bring support supplies to the Border Guard .

    • Tai Rom Yen National Park ( อุทยานแห่งชาติ ใต้ ร่มเย็น ) - the 425 km² park was opened on December 31, 1991. It has numerous waterfalls, such as the 22-tier Dard Fa waterfall (Thai: น้ำตก ดาดฟ้า ).

Local administration

There are five small towns ( Thesaban Tambon ) in the county:

  • Wiang Sa ( เทศบาล ตำบล เวียงสระ ) consists of parts of the tambon Wiang Sa and Ban Song,
  • Ban Song ( เทศบาล ตำบล บ้าน ส้อง ) consists of the remaining parts of the Tambon Ban Song,
  • Khao Niphan ( เทศบาล ตำบล เขา นิพันธ์ ) consists of the entire Tambon Khao Niphan,
  • Thung Luang ( เทศบาล ตำบล ทุ่ง หลวง ) consists of the entire tambon Thung Luang,
  • Mueang Wiang ( เทศบาล ตำบล เมือง เวียง ) consists of further parts of the Tambon Wiang Sa.

Tambon Khlong Chanuan is administered by a " Tambon Administrative Organization " (องค์การ บริหารส่วน ตำบล - Tambon Administrative Organization, TAO).
