Amphoe Sadao ( Thai : อำเภอ สะเดา ) is a county ( amphoe - administrative district) in Songkhla Province . Songkhla Province is located in the southern region of Thailand .
The name Sadao ( สะเดา ) is the Thai word for the neem tree .
geography
Neighboring districts and territories (from west clockwise): Amphoe Khuan Don and Khuan Kalong of Satun Province and Amphoe Khlong Hoi Khong , Hat Yai , Chana and Na Thawi of Songkhla province. To the southwest are the states of Kedah and Perlis of Malaysia .
traffic
The Phetkasem Highway, the longest road in Thailand, which connects the state capital Bangkok with the national border with Malaysia, ends in Sadao .
For rail travelers, Padang Besar is the border station of the railway line to Butterworth ( Penang ).
history
The area of today's Sadao County was the Tambon Sadao of Chang Lon District in Saiburi Province (now Kedah ) more than 100 years ago . When the British and Siam (now Thailand) signed the Anglo-Siamese Treaty of 1909, Sadao stayed with Thailand.
In 1917 the Tambon Sadao was officially elevated to an amphoe . The district has been under martial law since 2004 .

Local administration
There are two towns ( Thesaban Mueang ) in the county:
- Sadao ( เทศบาล เมือง สะเดา ), consisting of the entire tambon Sadao,
- Padang Besar ( เทศบาล เมือง ปา ดัง เบ ซาร์ ), consisting of parts of the Tambon Padang Besar.
There are also four small towns ( Thesaban Tambon ) in the district:
- Prik ( เทศบาล ตำบล ปริก ), consisting of parts of the Tambon Prik,
- Khlong Ngae ( เทศบาล ตำบล คลอง แงะ ), consisting of parts of the Tambon Phang La,
- Samnak Kham ( เทศบาล ตำบล สำนัก ขาม ), consisting of the whole tambon Samnak Kham
- Padang ( เทศบาล ตำบล ปา ดัง ), consisting of further parts of the Tambon Padang Besar.
There are also six “tambon administration organizations” (TAO, องค์การ บริหาร ส่วน ตำบล ) for the tambon or the parts of tambon in the county that do not belong to any town.
