Andreas Nesselthaler
Andreas Nesselthaler (born November 22, 1748 in Langenisarhofen , Lower Bavaria, † September 24, 1821 in Salzburg ) was the last Salzburg court painter .
Life
The son of a watchmaker came to his uncle Martin Nesselthaler, a painter and gilder, at the age of 16 in Baden near Vienna, where he learned painting as a craft. From 1772 to 1776 he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna under Franz Anton Maulbertsch , who employed him as an assistant in side altar paintings for churches in Győr (1772/74) and Götzens (1775).
In 1779 he traveled via Trieste , Venice , Bologna and Florence to Rome , where he worked as an assistant to Ignaz Unterberger . From 1782 to 1784 he was involved in the painting of the Palace of Caserta in Naples under Heinrich Friedrich Füger . He created allegories in the library and Viennese vedute in the boudoir and reception room of Queen Maria Karolina . In Naples he met Raphael Mengs and Johann Friedrich Reiffenstein . Influenced by Reiffenstein and Anne-Claude-Philippe, Comte de Caylus and Vicente Requeno, he learned encaustic painting in Rome .
Following orders for the Russian court, in 1789 he entered the service of the Salzburg Prince Archbishop Hieronymus von Colloredo , for whom he created an encaustic cabinet with 56 landscapes, images of animals and fruits, mythological and religious representations in the Prince Archbishop's residence . In 1794 he became a court painter , but was also allowed to work for other clients. He was also a groom and gallery inspector and worked as a collector, broker and advisor. After secularization in 1803, he worked for the Elector Ferdinand of Tuscany and then for the Bavarian Crown Prince and later King Ludwig I. He died in 1821 ravaged by gout and was at the Salzburg Petersfriedhof buried.
Nesselthaler created oil paintings and encaustic paintings with landscapes, religious and mythological motifs, portraits, but also altarpieces and frescoes for churches. He became famous for his banners and his collection of the most beautiful prospectuses in the country .
