Anthony Sherwood

Anthony Sherwood (* 1949 in Halifax , Nova Scotia ) is a Canadian actor , producer, director and writer. Before his acting career, Sherwood had initial successes as an R&B musician.

From 1992 to 2001, Sherwood was the national co-chair of the March 21 Campaign for the Federal Government of Canada, International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination . Sherwood has received international recognition and awards for his efforts to raise awareness of the importance of racial equality.

Life

Sherwood grew up in a musical family as one of nine children. His grandmother Alice Kane (nee White) was a music teacher, his mother an amateur singer, and his second aunt the opera singer Portia White, Canada's first Afro-Canadian opera singer. At the age of one, the family moved to Montreal , where he spent his childhood in the Little Burgundy neighborhood. In 1997 he attended production courses at the Canadian Film Center.

Career

Sherwood began his stage career in 1975 as a musical performer in Montreal and had roles in Ain't Misbehavin ' , Cabaret and The Music Man . From 1979 he was also seen in various Canadian and American television films.

In 1986 he got the role of the CIA agent Jason Locke in the re-casting of the fourth season of the television series Airwolf and in 1989 that of Dillon Beck in the CBC television series The Guns of the Law (English. Street Legal ), which he in the end of the series in Embodied in 1994. In 1992 he was nominated for the Gemini Award in the category "Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role" (German: "Best representation of an actor in a supporting role").

In April 1991, Sherwood founded the production company Anthony Sherwood Productions, which specialized in productions with a focus on African-Canadian history and culture and took up the issue of social justice . In 2001 she produced the documentary Honor Before Glory , which won second prize at the Hollywood Black Film Festival in Los Angeles and a Gemini Award in 2002.

The documentary Music - A Family Tradition , produced by Sherwood for CBC , won a Gemini Award in 1997 and was nominated for an Emmy . He also produced and directed the documentary Nowhere to Run , which deals with the global landmine crisis . His film Mozambique - A Land of Hope is about the AIDS epidemic in Africa and was presented at the International AIDS Conference in Toronto in August 2006 . His documentary 100 Years of Faith is about the oldest black church in the Canadian province of Quebec . In 2009 he produced and directed the documentary Knocking On Heaven's Door , which deals with gang violence in Kingston , Jamaica .

Between 1995 and 1998, Sherwood presenter and speaker of the three-part TV documentary series Forbidden Places of Discovery Channel . From 2002 to 2005 he hosted the television talk show In The Black on OMNI Television, the first talk show on Canadian television with exclusive interviews with prominent Afro-Canadians.

Sherwood returned to the stage in 2009 and played Marty in the musical Dreamgirls at the Grand Theater in London , Ontario . In 2015 he starred in William Shakespeare's play Othello at the Ale House Theater.

In February 2010 Sherwood staged a lesson for the stage about the African-Canadian hero William Hall (VC). In 2012, Sherwood wrote and directed the play TITANIC: The Untold Story , which premiered on the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the RMS Titanic ; the play premiered at the Alderney Landing Theater in Nova Scotia . In July 2016 staged Sherwood the stage play The Color of Courage on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the formation of Canada's purely black military unit in World War I was born.

Sherwood's first novella, Music In The Dark , was released in March 2015.
