Antoine Duprat
Antoine Duprat , also Antoine du Prat (born January 17, 1463 in Issoire , † July 9, 1535 at Château de Nantouillet near Meaux ) was a French cardinal and chancellor of France .
Life
Duprat was the eldest son of Antoine II. Duprat, lord of Veyrières, and his first wife Jacqueline Bohier. His half-brothers were Thomas Duprat , later Bishop of Clermont , and Claude Duprat , Abbot of Mozac near Riom and Bishop of Mende .
He was the first President of the Parliament of Paris when the Duchess of Angoulême entrusted him with the education of her son, who later became King Francis I , in 1507 . After his accession to the throne in 1515, he was appointed Chancellor, and in 1516 he concluded the Bologna Concordat with Pope Leo X , which sacrificed the Gallican freedoms and surrendered the clergy to the king's will. The hatred of Duprat was heightened by the high taxes he imposed on the church to cover the costs of the war . Nevertheless, he retained the favor of the king and his mother, who was regent during his captivity from 1525 to 1526. Since he entered the clergy after the death of his wife (August 19, 1507) and had been ordained priest in 1517 , he became Archbishop of Sens in 1525 . Pope Clement VII elevated him to cardinal on November 21, 1527 . In April 1528 he was installed as a cardinal priest of the titular church of Sant'Anastasia . He initiated the strict penal edicts against the supporters of the Reformation in France. In 1534 he "applied" for election to the Pope, but without success. In 1528, in addition to his archbishopric, he received the diocese of Albi and in 1534 also the diocese of Meaux for administration.
His son was Guillaume Duprat , Bishop of Clermont.
He was buried in the Cathedral of Sens .
