Anton Joseph Stein (born April 24, 1759 in Bladen in Upper Silesia , † October 4, 1844 in Vienna ) was an Austrian pedagogue and philologist .

Life

Anton Joseph Stein came from a poor background and was the son of a clerk. At the age of 14 he entered the Franziskaner-Gymnasium in Leobschütz in 1773 and then studied philosophy in Breslau . During his studies, he decided to travel to Rome , but was persuaded to continue his studies in Vienna, whereupon he undertook Italian language studies there and also learned French, English, Spanish and ancient Greek, as well as other branches of knowledge such as literature . There he made the acquaintance of the councilors Karl Anton von Martini and Joseph von Sonnenfels . For his livelihood he gave private lessons and in 1781 came as a teacher to the young Counts von Leopold and Joseph Daun, grandsons of Field Marshal Leopold Joseph von Daun , at Ensegg Castle in Upper Austria ; he lived there until 1784.

In 1785 he applied for the teaching post of poetics at the Academic Gymnasium in Vienna and was soon appointed professor with the help of Hofrat Johann Melchior Birkenstock . When the grammar school was handed over to the Piarists in 1802 , Anton Joseph Stein switched to the grammar school at St. Anna , but was unexpectedly appointed in 1804 to succeed Franz Karl Alters as professor of classical literature at the philosophical faculty of the University of Vienna, where he taught as a professor of classical literature until 1825. At his own request, he was retired by Emperor Franz I in 1825, conferring the title of Imperial Councilor . In the summers he lived mostly in Baden in Lower Austria .

At the age of 84 he decided to publish his German, Latin and Greek poems.

His students included Count Anton Alexander Auersperg , Johann Ludwig Deinhardstein , Johann Gabriel Seidl , Ludwig Halirsch , Friedrich Halm , Eduard von Badenfeld (1800–1860), Franz Grillparzer , Eduard von Bauernfeld , Nikolaus Lenau and Johann Nepomuk Nestroy , which he wrote in Latin and especially taught Greek language and literature.

Anton Joseph Stein was also known to Ludwig van Beethoven . One of the smaller and smallest works by Beethoven, of which two versions are available, is the wedding song composed in 1819 for the marriage of Nanni Giannatasio del Rio (1792–1868) to the councilor Leopold von Schmerling (1780–?), A brother of Joseph von Schmerling Anton Joseph Stein wrote the text for this.

personality

Anton Joseph Stein was an original who never lacked coarse and funny ideas. When one of his students ran away after taking a bad exam and slammed the door violently, he shouted after him: "The stone is too hard for him, so he wants to take the anger out on wood." Another time a student named Fischer during his exam it had passed it badly, and Stein, whose name was Anton, had a lot to help and ask, he exclaimed: "I am like St. Anthony who has to preach to the fish." On Cicero's birthday, January 3rd, Anton took care of Joseph Stone dressed in black, a bouquet of flowers in hand, to come to the college. As a poet he had verve, and especially as an epigrammatist, he had biting wit. A true example of a devastating epigram can be: For example, the following “medallion” is applicable: “Alastor looks with proud pleasure | His image on Lais' bare chest | Indeed, there was still a bigger wimp hanging Not on a beautiful gallows. ” His epigrams on Professor Ignaz Liebel would not have given him too much pleasure; so one thing goes : “Lipp will teach you to do it if you don't know What 'noble', 'beautiful' and 'ugly' is ”.

Finally, let us remember a little note by Franz Graeffer , which literally reads: “Professor Stein Anton, the philologist, died a few years ago, not aged, although well over 80, very old and very rich; well managed for many, many years with a strong pension; and also rich in real stones. He gave himself up to the lovely passion of painting the nearest small pavement stones dark gray so that they looked like gems. What a fine archaeological thought! Stein's new antique stones, where may they be? But not where he wanted all tobacco smokers to go: by the devil? "

A friend of Anton Stein's was the epigram writer Johann Möser (1767–?), With whom he used to climb the Kahlenberg every Sunday when he was still in his eighties .

Honors

  • The City of Vienna awarded him the Salvator Medal, which has been awarded as a municipal award since the end of the 18th century.
  • Either in 1834 or 1844 a coin was issued in honor of his 75th or 85th birthday.
  • One of his students, Ignaz Kron (1798–?), Had his teacher erected a memorial in the Sankt Marxer Friedhof , where Anton Joseph Stein is buried, which has since been weathered beyond recognition.
  • Vienna's Steingasse, where the painter Josef Engelhart also had his apartment and studio, was named after Anton Joseph Stein .
