Antonina Nikolaevna Piroschkowa ( Russian Антонина Николаевна Пирожкова * June 18 . Jul / 1. July  1909 greg. In Krasny Yar near Syrjanskoje ; † 12. September 2010 in Sarasota ) was a Soviet civil engineer and university teacher .

Life

After the untimely death of her father in 1923, Piroschkowa gave math tutoring. She studied at the Tomsk Siberian Technological Institute, named after Feliks Dzierżyński , and graduated in 1930. After graduating, Piroschkowa worked in the design office of the Kuznetskstroi construction company , which built the town of Novokuznetsk for the new metallurgical plant .

In 1932 Piroschkowa met the writer Isaak Emmanuilowitsch Babel , whom she married two years later. In 1937 they had their daughter Lidija. According to the revolutionary tradition, they did not register the marriage, which later led to bureaucratic problems.

From 1934 Piroschkowa worked in Moscow in the metro project for the construction of the Moscow Metro . She became chief designer and designed in particular the Mayakovskaya station .

On May 15, 1939, Isaak Babel was arrested by employees of the NKVD in his house in Peredelkino . Neither his mother nor Piroshkova were informed of his shooting in the NKVD prison on January 27, 1940. To her inquiries, Piroshkova always received the answer that her husband lived in the gulag and was doing reconstruction work in Siberia . It was only after Stalin's death and the rehabilitation of the writers in 1954 that she learned that her husband was dead. However, the Ministry of State Security of the USSR informed her that her husband had died on March 17, 1941 while working during the war. Babel's archive, which was confiscated when she was arrested, has disappeared.

During the German-Soviet war , Piroschkowa was evacuated with her daughter in Abkhazia . There she headed an engineering group for the construction of railway tunnels in the Caucasus . In the 1950s she was involved in building projects in the spa districts in the Caucasus.

Piroshkova later taught at the Department of Tunnels and Subways of the Moscow Institute of Transport Engineers . With others she wrote the first and only textbook for tunnel and subway construction.

Piroschkowa retired in 1965 and began collecting materials on the life and work of Babel. In 1972 she published an anthology with the materials and memories. She became a member of the Commission for the Literary Heritage of Babel.

In 1996 Piroschkowa emigrated to the USA and settled in Silver Spring to be close to her grandson, the actor and director Andrei Alexandrowitsch Malajew-Babel. She later moved to Sarasota, where her grandson was a professor at Florida State University's New College . She published other books on Babel. In July 2010, Piroschkowa was invited to Odessa to appraise the model of a monument to Babel. Since she could no longer travel herself, she solved this task by letter based on photos. The memorial was inaugurated after her death on September 4, 2011 in the presence of her daughter Lidija, her grandson Andrei and her great-grandson Nikolai in Odessa.
