Antonio Bayter Abud

Antonio Bayter Abud MXY (born October 8, 1933 in El Banco , Magdalena , † August 21, 2020 in Medellín ) was a Colombian Roman Catholic religious , Superior General and Vicar Apostolic of Inírida .

Life

Antonio Bayter Abud studied philosophy and theology at the seminary in El Banco and received on 21 October 1956 ordination . He completed a degree in spirituality at the Center for Spirituality of the Carmelites in Mexico . He joined the religious community of the Misioneros Javerianos de Yarumal and made his religious profession on December 3, 1952 . He worked in pastoral care in what was then the Apostolic Vicariate of Istmina, today the diocese of Istmina-Tadó , where he was pastor in San Pablo (1956–1957), pastor of San Francisco (1957–1958) and pastor in Condoto (1959–1960 ) was. In the training center of the Yarumal missionaries he was a teacher in the minor seminary (1961–1962), spiritual director of the seminary (1963–1966), rector of the minor seminary (1963–1966; 1967), rector of the major seminary (1968) and rector of the Philosophical Faculty (1969–1972). At the same time he was a member of the General Council of his order from 1966 to 1972 . He was later elected for two consecutive terms (1973-1984) and was Superior General of the Misioneros Javerianos de Yarumal (MXY). In 1985 he was sent to Ecuador and was pastor of Sayausi in the Archdiocese of Cuenca and at the same time regional coordinator of the Javerianos missionaries of Yarumal during this time (1985-1989). In 1991 he was installed in the Apostolic Vicariate of Buenaventura as General Treasurer of the Vicariate and Pastor of the Cathedral.

Pope John Paul II appointed him titular bishop of Sucarda and Vicar Apostolic of Inírida on November 30, 1996 . He received his episcopal ordination from the Apostolic Nuncio in Colombia, Archbishop Paolo Romeo , on February 16, 1997; Co-consecrators were Heriberto Correa Yepes MXY, Vicar Emeritus of Buenaventura , and José Gustavo Angel Ramírez MXY, Vicar Apostolic of Mitú .

On December 3, 2013, Pope Francis accepted Antonio Bayter Abud's resignation due to reasons of age. He then worked as the economic director of his order in Medellín.
