Unirea Alba Iulia is a Romanian football club from Alba Iulia . He has been playing in the third Romanian football league, Liga III , since 2016 .

history

The association was founded in 1924 as " Unirea Mihai Viteazu Alba Iulia ". After ten years, Alba Iulia played for the first time in Divizia B , the second highest Romanian football league. In their first season they reached 6th place. Alba Iulia played until the season 1938/39 in the second league and then went into the Divizia C from. From the 1942/43 season they played again in Divizia B, two years later they had to start again in the 3rd division. 1947 was renamed “ FC Unirea Alba Iulia ”. From 1947 to 1970 Alba Iulia only took part in regional championships. In the 1970/71 one rose again to the Divizia C. Nine seasons later, the club again reached Divizia B. Between 1988 and 2003 they played in Divizia B. In 1997, the club name was changed to " FC Apulum Alba Iulia ". In the 2002/03 season they won Divizia B with the then coach Aurel Șunda and thus played in Divizia A for the first time in the 2003/04 season, during which the previous assistant coach Alexandru Pelici Șunda replaced . In the first season, the club reached table rank 6 and was thus the best climber before Petrolul Ploieşti and FC Bihor Oradea , both of which had to relegate again. After this sensational season, Alba Iulia took 14th place in the 2004/05 season and had to relegate to Divizia B again. In the following season, which was tackled in July 2005 with Cornel Țălnar, things continued to decline. After 113 days in office, Țălnar was replaced by Neluțu Popa , who was replaced in January 2006 by Constantin Cârstea and his assistant coach Mihai Zamfir . After the draw in the home game against CFR Timișoara , Cârstea resigned on April 15, 2006 and Zamfir was his successor. Despite the numerous coaching changes, the club was relegated again at the end of the season.

Since there was already a second division club in Râmnicu Vâlcea with CSM Râmnicu Vâlcea and there were no sponsors for a second team in Divizia B, Oltchim Râmnicu Vâlcea , one of the athletic climbers from Divizia C, sold his right to start in the summer of 2006 to FC Municipal Apulum who avoided relegation in this way and then changed his name to FC Unirea 2006 Alba Iulia . In the second half of the 2006/07 season Mihai Zamfir resigned after the home defeat against Politehnica Timișoara II on April 21, 2007. Under the previous assistant coach Adrian Bicheși , who was supported by the team captain, goalkeeper Gabriel Rotaru , the season ended in fourth place in the table. At the end of May 2007, George Ciorceri signed a two-year contract as head coach, but resigned in the following season on October 1, 2007 and was replaced by the returnee Aurel Șunda . With this the fourth place in the table could be reached again. In the 2008/09 season you won with the coach Adrian Falub , who had replaced Aurel Șunda, who had been dismissed the day before on April 7, 2009, the League II and rose after four seasons back to the first division of Romania. Falub was dismissed after the 20th match day of the 2009/10 season , but also the commitment of the former Bosnian-Herzegovinian national coach Blaž Slišković on March 12, 2010 could not prevent the immediate relegation.

On July 27, 2010, a new trainer was introduced with Marius Baciu . During the first half of the second division season, the club separated from coach Baciu and after an interim period under Adorian Himcinschi , Marian Pană took over the training of the team in January 2011. After only three weeks, however, he left the club on February 18, 2011 to join the first division club Unirea Urziceni . The coaching office took over Gabriel Stan , who resigned on April 20, 2011 and was replaced by goalkeeper Gabriel Rotaru . A week before the start of the 2011/12 second division season , Stelian Gherman returned to Unirea as a coach.

After the 2012/13 season, the first team temporarily stopped playing and started in the fifth division from 2014/15. Since 2016 Unirea Alba Iulia has played in League III .
