The North German Garden Show - Arboretum Ellerhoop is a permanent garden show in the Pinneberg district ; it lies between Pinneberg and Barmstedt and belongs to the municipality of Ellerhoop , district of Thiensen. The landscaped park is located on the edge of the Bilsbek lowland. It is embedded in the typical Holstein landscape .

The North German Garden Show - Arboretum Ellerhoop comprises a total area of around 17.5 hectares, of which around 8 hectares are available to the public as a local recreation facility and for the purposes of school and public education.

historical overview

In 1943 the tree nursery Timm & Co. bought the historic Münsterhof. The last owner of the Timm & Co. tree nursery, Erich Frahm, set up a 3.5-hectare arboretum in 1956 in collaboration with the dendrologist Gerd Krüssmann .

In 1980, the then District Administrator W. Hebisch acquired the arboretum, including a 10-hectare extension area. As a result, a working group was founded, to which the Association of German Tree Nurseries , the Botanical Garden of the University of Hamburg and the Institute for Practice and Theory in Schools (IPTS) belonged. The first plans were carried out by H. Kasten. The development of the overall topic as well as the open space and planting planning design concepts for the arboretum, which has now grown to 17 hectares, was carried out by Hans-Dieter Warda.

In 1989 the support group Arboretum Baumbark Ellerhoop-Thiensen e. V. to support the diverse activities of the arboretum. A contract between the Förderkreis and the district of Pinneberg to take over the management of the company was concluded in 1996 in order to avert the threat of closure of the arboretum through cost savings.

Warda has been running the arboretum on a voluntary basis since 1985 on both a scientific and artistic level. For his services to the arboretum, he was awarded the Horst Koehler Memorial Prize in 2001 and the Federal Cross of Merit on ribbon in 2003.

In 2009, the facility was renamed North German Garden Show - Arboretum Ellerhoop, as the focus in the design of the park has shifted towards a garden show.

Tasks of the North German Garden Show - Arboretum Ellerhoop

Crabapple and Rhododendron

While the focus was still on the dendrological aspects under the management of Timm & Co., i.e. collecting and increasing the range of trees, the arboretum was to serve other tasks after the purchase by the Pinneberg district. Since public funds were used for acquisition and entertainment and the use was intended for the general public and not for experts, the political bodies decided to focus on the areas of schools , public education , local recreation and ecology in addition to the pure wood presentation .

Financing of the North German Garden Show - Arboretum Ellerhoop

Since the conclusion of the leasing and usage contract on January 1, 1996, the Förderkreis has received a fixed annual grant from the Pinneberg district that covers around one tenth of the total costs. Since neither professional associations nor other institutions pay further subsidies, the majority of the costs must be covered by the sponsorship group. Essentially, membership fees, entrance fees and individual donations contribute to this. The pure wood presentation, the species and cultivar comparison plants are didactically and creatively prepared and connected with other tasks that not only experts but all visitor groups benefit from it. Otherwise the so important non-profit status of the sponsorship group would be endangered. Within the scope of the possibilities available in Thiensen (staffing, means of entertainment) a connection between the botanical-dendrological tasks, school biology, ecology and aesthetics is sought. After many years of experience, these tasks can be combined with one another.

Main topic

School, study and research

The North German Garden Show - Arboretum Ellerhoop serves to intensify practical and theoretical biology lessons at general and vocational schools. In addition, it is intended to support and promote academic and horticultural training as well as botanical research.

The school biology departments include:

One of the newer attractions in the North German Garden Show - Arboretum Ellerhoop is the amber garden, which opened in April 2008. This part of the school biology department shows the origin and use of amber under the catchphrase “Fascination Amber - The Gold of Trees”. Among other things, visitors learn something about the legendary amber forests 50 million years ago and can admire wall-high photo panels of the famous Amber Room in St. Petersburg in the Amber Pavilion.

In addition, the North German Garden Show - Arboretum Ellerhoop, together with the landscape architecture department of the Osnabrück University of Applied Sciences and the Otto-Henneberg-Poppenbüttel Foundation , Hamburg , runs some woody research projects. Thus, on various woody plants of the water forests such as the red maple ( Acer rubrum ), the bald chokeberry ( Aronia arbutifolia ), Cephalanthus occidentalis , the white cypress ( Chamaecyparis thyoides ), the squid holly ( Ilex glabra ), the swamp magnolia ( Magnolia virginiana ) as well as the bald cypress ( Taxodium distichum ) and the upright bald cypress ( Taxodium distichum var. Imbricarium ), studies have been carried out on their anatomical adaptation to the environment and location.

Another research focus is the screening, breeding and selection of shrubs - Peony . In the last fifteen years, the North German Garden Show has not only brought together the largest range of shrub peonies in Germany with all wild species and 245 varieties, but has also started its own selection and breeding work. The focus of interest are the American Lutea hybrids and the wild species Paeonia rockii (SGHaw et LALauener) T. Hong et JJ Li and their hybrids from China . According to the results of the inspection so far, there are around 2,500, some 25-year-old specimens of the Paeonia rockii in the garden show. This vigorous and over two meters high wild species is much more valuable than the Suffruticosa hybrids from China, Japan and France, some of which are extremely unsuitable for gardens .

Environmental education as an important task

The North German Garden Show - Arboretum Ellerhoop is a place of cultural encounter and education. In addition, it has set itself the task of making its visitors aware of environmental problems and the laws of ecology . Various teaching objects, such as an ecological nature trail, should contribute to this. In the “Native Trees and Shrubs” department, rare and endangered woody species, especially from potentially endangered Schleswig-Holstein locations, are compiled. For this purpose, these are cultivated in protective collections and presented to the public. These include the shrub birch ( Betula humilis ), wood apple ( Malus sylvestris ) and wild pear ( Pyrus pyraster) species .

The plant collections

The trees continue to occupy a central position within the theme of the North German Garden Show - Arboretum Ellerhoop. The plant collections are constantly being expanded. The focus is on the genera Prunus , apples ( Malus ) and hydrangeas ( Hydrangea ). However, after the planted specimens have been standing for over 50 years, signs of soil fatigue cannot be overlooked. Therefore, a slow conversion to other flowering trees takes place on these areas. A new Sichtungsschwerpunkt represent the autumn dyers trees that in connection with a grass - and asters - garden a taste of Indian Summers convey.

On the shores of the lake there are large stocks of different types of bamboo , the genera Phyllostachys , Fargesia , Pseudosasa and Sasa being characteristic. The characteristic main plants are Alnus glutinosa 'Imperialis' , various Salix species and Miscanthus varieties. Bamboo sighting has been practiced intensively at the North German Garden Show for around 25 years. A bamboo jungle path has been set up in a well-grown, indestructible phyllostachys forest.

The heather garden near the Münsterhof shows a large range of Calluna and Erica representatives as well as the most important herbaceous and woody plants of the heather.

In order to extend the park season and attract visitors early on, a camellia house was set up in 1998 , in which the flowering period often begins at the end of January. Worth seeing are the department with topiaries and located in front of the gazebo rose garden .

Cottage garden and garden art

An important task of the North German Garden Show is the preservation of old rural cultural assets. In the course of around ten years, one of the most beautiful and extensive cottage gardens in northern Germany was created in front of the south gable of the historic Münsterhof , in which old cultivated forms of ornamental and useful plants are preserved.

In addition, special emphasis has been placed on the creation of colored plantings and colored gardens in recent years. There is a white garden, a blue and a red border, the sun path, the garden of purple impressions and a border in romantic colors (lilac-pink). A particular specialty of the garden show are both the flower bulb deforestation in the wooded area and the approximately one hectare meadow with thousands of fragrant poet's daffodils .

A high-trunked avenue of wisteria , the so-called blue rain tunnel, which unfolds its blue blossoms in spring , is particularly admired . There is also a fragrance and touch garden for the visually impaired and the blind, which is also popular with sighted people, a Chinese garden with a moon gate and lunar stone setting, and a southern garden with Mediterranean trees and plants. Thousands of lotus flowers bloom on the south bank of the Gartenschau lake in July and August . Here guests of the park can not only admire the tropical flower beauty, but also experience the phenomenon of the "micro-roughness" of the lotus petals (lotus effect ) directly on the object.

The scenic and harmonious facility in Ellerhoop-Thiensen makes it clear that school garden themes, woodland viewing, local recreation, botanical-dendrological science and ecology on the one hand and garden beauty on the other hand are not mutually exclusive. Well over 100,000 visitors a year impressively confirm this park development policy.
