Arnold Freiherr von Biegeleben (born April 16, 1883 in Darmstadt ; † October 11, 1940 in Jullouville , France ) was a German officer , most recently lieutenant general and commander of the 6th Infantry Division in World War II .

Life

Biegeleben joined the 1st Grand Ducal Hessian Field Artillery Regiment No. 25 of the Prussian Army in Darmstadt on March 29, 1901 as a flag squire . He was promoted to lieutenant in mid-August 1902 and graduated from the Jüterbog field artillery shooting school in the spring of 1905 . From 1906 to 1908 Biegeleben was adjutant of the 2nd division, then rose to regimental adjutant and was promoted in this position to first lieutenant on August 18, 1910 .

After the outbreak of World War I , Biegeleben and his regiment were deployed on the Western Front . He became a captain on October 8, 1914 and as such shortly afterwards battery leader and from February 1, 1917 leader of III. Department. For his achievements during the war, Biegeleben was awarded both classes of the Iron Cross , the Knight's Cross of the Royal House Order of Hohenzollern with Swords and the Hessian Medal of Bravery .

After the armistice of Compiègne , the return to Germany and the demobilization of his regiment there, Biegeleben was an adjutant of the General Command of the VI. Reserve Corps at the Eastern Border Guard . He was then transferred to the Provisional Reichswehr and assigned to the 6th Cavalry Regiment . There he acted from June 15, 1921 to January 31, 1925 as chief of the 1st Squadron in Pasewalk and was promoted to major on November 1, 1924 . This was followed by his transfer to the staff of the 1st Cavalry Division in Frankfurt (Oder) . On April 1, 1929, he joined the staff of the 15th (Prussian) Cavalry Regiment , took over the regiment on October 1, 1931 and commanded it until April 30, 1935. His promotion to major general was followed by his appointment to cavalry Commander Hanover. After further commands and promotion to lieutenant general, Biegeleben was appointed commander of the 6th Infantry Division on March 1, 1938.

With the mobilization before the beginning of the Second World War, his division was initially used to secure the western border and invaded France in 1940 in the western campaign through Luxembourg and Belgium . On August 5, 1940, Biegeleben received the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross for his services in the troop leadership . After the end of the campaign, he and his division remained there as an occupying force. He died of a heart attack on October 11, 1940 .
