action
Dr. Lily McKee, director of the United States' National Observatory, discovered shortly before July 4th that Comet Fletcher, which orbits Earth every 4,000 years, threw two large asteroids, Helios and Eros, off track en route to Earth and these will reach the earth. Helios is 400 m and Eros 4 km. She also discovers that a small asteroid had already struck Montana because of it and started a fire there that FEMA Director Jack Wallach was fighting there.
She then informs him what is going on. He therefore contacts the government with her so that she is taken seriously there. They follow her recommendation to evacuate the Kansas City area before Helios hits there. Shortly after the evacuation, Helios reaches Earth, where most of it burns up when it falls into the atmosphere because it is made of ice. However, some still hit and destroy a dam near Kansas City, causing flooding but no particular damage.
With regard to Eros, which after Helios is supposed to hit the earth, she recommends annihilation because it is made of nickel and would consequently cause destruction that would be global and would also cause a subsequent massive global ice age . In their opinion, humanity would only survive this with luck. With the help of airborne lasers from an experimental missile defense system and information from Dr. Lily McKee on the location of Eros, the government can destroy the asteroid, but not destroy it. That is why thousands of pieces of this asteroid will later reach Earth.
Most burn up, others cause damage to greater and lesser degrees all over the world. The largest piece, along with other smaller ones, hits Dallas, Texas , and destroys the city, killing tens of thousands. It leads to chaos breaking in there. With her family, father and son there, Dr. Lily McKee with Jack Wallach, who has to coordinate the rescue work there, to save her. After a long search in the destroyed city and with the help of the rescue workers, she succeeds, albeit just barely.
The world is slowly recovering from the catastrophe. By sending helpers and aid from all over the country under the guidance of FEMA , the infrastructure in the destroyed city of Dallas and its environs is gradually being stabilized again and the survivors are being cared for and cared for in a specially built tent city outside the destroyed city. In the meantime, Comet Fletcher passes Earth and is watched by everyone, developing the desire never to have to see it again after the terrible events.
