The Atair is a surveying , wreck search and research ship of the Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency (BSH) that is being equipped .

The new building replaces the previous building of the same name that went into service in 1987 . Commissioning is scheduled for 2020. It is already the fourth ship with this name with the federal authorities.

history

The replacement building was in September 2014 the Federal Republic of Germany announced Service. The contract for the construction was awarded in December 2016 to the Fr. Fassmer shipyard in Berne . The order volume was around 113,800,000 euros.

For capacity reasons, the contract to build the hull was awarded to German Naval Yards in Kiel . The keel was laid on December 20, 2017. Floating up and undocking from the construction dock took place on February 28, 2019. The ship was towed to Berne in March 2019 for final equipment. It was baptized on September 30, 2019 in Berne.

The ship will be the largest ship of the Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency. It is intended for use in the North and Baltic Seas as well as in the North Atlantic . Among other things, it will be used for geological and oceanographic measurements, for wreck search, in the development and testing of technical ship equipment and for tasks of marine environmental monitoring.

The ship will be equipped with a diesel-gas-electric drive. For power generation are two six-cylinder -Dual-fuel engine from Wärtsilä (type: 6L20 DF), each with 960  kW power are available. Both engines can be operated with low-emission liquefied natural gas (LNG), but also with diesel fuel . A six-cylinder diesel engine from Wärtsilä (type: 6L20) with an output of 1200 kW is also available. The motors are elastically mounted to minimize noise emissions in the water. The seven- bladed propeller is driven by an electric motor with an output of 1000 kW. The ship reaches a speed of around 13  knots .

The ship is each equipped with an electrically powered bow thruster with 330 kW power and a stern thruster with 200 kW power.

Compared to the drive with diesel fuel, the use of liquefied natural gas as fuel reduces the emission of CO 2 by around 20%, the emission of sulfur dioxide by around 90% and the emission of nitrogen oxides by around 80%. There is almost no particulate matter when burning liquefied natural gas. The liquid gas tank has a capacity of 130 m³. The ship can stay at sea for up to ten days using only liquefied natural gas as fuel. For operation with low-sulfur diesel fuel, one of the two dual-fuel engines and the diesel engine are equipped with an SCR exhaust gas cleaning system. With its propulsion system, the ship meets the requirements for the “ Blue Angel ” environmental label .

The deckhouse is located in the middle of the ship with a high forecastle in front . Behind the deckhouse is a 200 m² open working deck. Two wet laboratories, a dry laboratory and an oceanography and hydrography laboratory are housed on board.

Five 20-foot containers and two 10-foot containers can be carried on deck . These can be laboratory containers to expand the laboratory capacity and transport containers.

At the stern of the ship there is a swiveling stern boom and on the starboard side there is a working crane that can operate the entire working deck.

The ship's equipment also includes various sonar and echo sounders , a facility for measuring air pollution, extensive diving equipment and diving pressure chambers as well as two survey boats .

There is space on board for 18 crew members and 15 scientists.
