The Atair is one of three surveying, wreck search and research vessels operated by the Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency (BSH) in Hamburg . The shipowner is the Federal Republic of Germany, represented by the Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure .

history

The ship was built under construction number 1521 at the Kröger shipyard in Schacht-Audorf near Rendsburg . The construction costs amounted to 27.9 million DM.

The keel was laid on September 2, 1986, the launch on April 24, 1987. The godmother was Herta Dollinger, the wife of the then Federal Minister for Transport, Werner Dollinger . The ship was completed in July 1987 and put into service in August.

The ship is named after the star Atair (also Altair), the brightest star in the constellation Eagle . It is the third ship with this name with the federal agency.

Technical specifications

The ship is powered by a Siemens - electric motor with 600  kW power driven, acting on a fixed-pitch propeller. The ship thus reaches a speed of 11  knots . Two diesel generators , each with an output of 463 kW ( apparent power : 640  kVA ), are available for powering the traction motor and the on-board electrical system . A diesel generator with 103.8 kW power (apparent power: 177 kVA) is installed as the harbor generator, and a diesel generator with 10.6 kW power (apparent power: 10 kVA) is installed as the emergency generator. The engines are now run on synthetic GtL fuel . This is sulfur-free, which means better exhaust gas values are achieved than with conventional diesel fuels.

The ship is equipped with a bow thruster with 400 kW power.

The hull of the ship is reinforced with ice. The ship is classified with ice class "E".

The ship is equipped with various cranes and winches . There is a working crane with a radius of 12.5 m on board, as well as a jib and several davits .

commitment

The ship is mainly used for survey and wreck search work as well as for maintenance work on the swell measuring buoys and BSH measuring network stations in the German Exclusive Economic Zone of the North and Baltic Seas . The ship has the appropriate equipment for this, such as vertical and fan echo sounders as well as sonar systems .

The ship is also equipped with two shallow, 7.4 meter long survey boats, which are also fully equipped with echo sounders and data acquisition systems so that they can operate independently in shallow waters. Furthermore, there is a complete range of diving equipment on board, so that diving operations are possible both from the ship and from a survey boat. The Atair is equipped with an ROV .

There are several laboratories and scientific rooms on board the ship . There are spaces for additional laboratory containers . Two 20-foot containers and one 10-foot container can be loaded on top of each other, and two additional 10-foot containers if the boats are left out.

There is space on board for 16 crew members and seven scientists.

The main area of application is the German North Sea coast with its estuaries, the twelve-mile zone and the German exclusive economic zone in the North Sea.

The Altair put in their first 15 years of service until August 2002, about 150,000  nautical miles back and found 311 previously unknown underwater obstructions.

Replacement procurement Atair for 2020

At the end of 2016, the Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure ordered a replacement for the Atair, which is now over 30 years old . Around 114 million euros are to be invested in the new building of the same name . The contract for the construction was placed with the Fassmer shipyard in Berne . Commissioning is scheduled for 2020.
